Is this how things work in China?

I saw this video a few days ago and I couldn’t believe what I was watching.

WARNING: the video is disturbing. If you feel this should not be posted, please email the site administrator Mr L asap. Thanks.

This is the second video I’ve seen related to accidents taking place in China. In another, a young girl is knocked over and ignored by passers-by. Terrifying accidents where someone probably dies and many people standing near them, recognising what has happened, but totally ignoring them.

Is this moral? I mean, if this happened here, everybody would take notice and many people would try to help and help the woman to survive or if she doesn’t at least calling for the ambulance or the police. On the contrary, the Chinese drivers decide to ignore her as if it was something normal and pass just by her side without even stopping and being curious about what had happened.

I cdouldn't understand why they would be like this but I was told that apparently the sanitary system in China is very complicated. If someone decided to help an injured person and take him or her to the hospital they would have to pay for them. So, as not many people have money for that and medicines are so expensive, they prefer to ignore those situations.

I definitely think that this is unacceptable. Such a country, which is growing day-by-day, should not permit these things. The contrast is clear and frightening: one of the richest countries in the world is nurturing one of the poorest societies - a society that can’t take care of others due to an unfair health-care system that cures just those who can pay…

  1. I too am shocked. Shocked and worried. This is a good example of how the organisation of our society affects us as indivudals and groups.

I don't believe that the Chinese are more heartless or uncaring as individual human beings. The reaction of those in the car was one of shock. But I do believe that the politics and policies of the country (explained by Agustina) have reduced the reaction to one of discomfort rather than instant empathy.

As humans living in society, we are capable of such apparently cold and calculating behaviour. We in Europe are by no means immune: think of the Nazis or of the more recent Balkan wars.

My worry is that the current crisis leads to welfare reforms which put us all in the position of these (unfortunate) Chinese. Will we be doing the same in 10 years time?

  2. I can’t believe it. How an earth people can let persons on that situation! I don’t understand how their conscience can stay clam and clean after letting somebody die or suffer in pain in front of them.
The second video is equally horrible. The poor girl is there lying in the floor because a car has rand over and it is not only that they ignore her it is also that another car runs over her and doesn’t stop.
At least there is a good samaritan that stops and helps the girl.
How can it be that a country that is one of the first powers has such serious problems? I think this is one of the reasons of why China is still a developing country.

  3. I agree with both. It is indeed a video that portrays how the organisation of our society affects us as citizens. Videos like this leave me speechless… aren’t authorities embarrassed by the loss of values that Chinese society has had?
We can clearly appreciate that they have a lack of solidarity, which is due to the political organisation of the country. They probably feel empathy for that women, but they don’t show it, simply because they are too afraid of the economic or social problems that helping her may involve. I believe that this is the reason for such a heart-breaking reaction, or maybe I just want to believe it. Because if this is not the reason, what is it then? Are they just colder than us and that’s all? Let’s hope not.
But still, I can’t imagine myself being calm after driving by a dying body. Nevertheless, as said before, worst acts like those of Hitler have taken place in Europe. I’ve read many books about the Nazis and the Holocaust and it was demoralizing how they killed unreasonably. It’s crazy.
So maybe that’s the way we’ll all be like a in few years’ time, if the situation radicalises and we end up in the same position as them. I hope not, though. I hope that if political changes take place, we fight against injustices and against policies that may make us act in such heart-breaking ways.

  4. Oh my god! I can't believe what I am seeing! what on earth is going on in that country?! And this is the future hegemony?
This is a pretty impresive video. We can clearly see the situation and how people ignore the person that is injured in the middle of the road, being conscious of the severity of the situation.
I have been told that in China, in these situations, sometimes the person who is injured can demand and claim for money to the person that has helped them. Thats why people don't help the person because they don't want to take the risk. It is sad but it's true. This is part of the world we don't know about and is new for us. I hope serious moves will be taken.

  5. This behaviour it's just apporling. I just can't believe that people are able to leave an injured body on the street without any help. I was very shocked about this video, I just don't care if the sanitary system is very strange or whatever but this is absolutely unacceptable, they can't just leave them alone. This in Spain it's inimaginable, we are very lucky to live with a estable and good security system. I hope this actions will not be reapeted again.

  6. I think this is unbelievable! I just can’t figure out how a person can leave a damaged person, there, in the ground without even caring about her health! I can’t understand how a person can be so hard, and don’t even worry, leaving her unconscious and passing by with the car.

They don’t seem conscious about the fact that we are not in middle age anymore, we are in the XXI century! And this is not the first video I’ve seen coming from China where Chinese people act this way. I’ve also seen another video where this 2 year old girl is hit by a van, and people go by without helping her, and moments later another car passes over the body, without even looking backwards.

I just think that this behaviour is unacceptable, it seems as if they don’t care about life, they let people from their same country die, they don’t even do an effort to help them, maybe it is because society has showed them this way, but I think that it is a matter of proper feelings and morality.

  7. Both videos are awfully shocking… how do those people feel when passing by the injured body? Are they senseless and unemotional? Are they immoral? Cold-hearted? There is no words to describe someone like this…I can’t understand it. From my point of view this is inhuman. In this kind of situations, despite the sanitary system being complicated, we should help each other. And if this is the real excuse, why don’t they complain about it to the government and authorities? Or why they don’t just call an ambulance? It’s quite simple if what you truly want to do is help. Personally, I can’t believe that those people don’t feel the need to help the injured person. It’s horrifying to think this. How can an innocent girl be knocked over twice and totally ignored by the two drivers and by the people passing by? It’s inexplicable…

  8. In class I heard my friends talk about this but I couldn't imagine that ALL the cars that past by didn't take any notice! What kind of joke is this? I must say I played the video twice, as I thought it must have been tricked because I think this is unbelievable. Although after reading Agus' explanation about the health system in China, I still can't get into my mind how people can take no notice of someone committing suicide in front of them! Despite the fact that you may have to pay for someone's health care, it's not ethical to go by and just filming it...at least someone should call an ambulance. What kind of world do we live in nowadays? Is this country the one which is expected to take over the world? Well I'm completely against this, as I will not accept this kind of moral behaviour and such a poor health care system! If the world is supposed to be influenced by eastern countries, are we all eventually going to act this way? I hope not, because it would definitely be a huge and incredible mistake.

    1. Hello Dude,

There are many advantages to working in a foreign country like China. One such advantage involves learning a new culture. Applying for and obtaining a work visa is one way to expose yourself to Chinese culture while supporting yourself financially. Thanks a lot.
