Is Torres worth it?

Roman Abramovich bought Fernando Torres last week. Our Spanish international player cost Abramovich 58'5M! Torres didn't hesitate and accepted the offer at once. He left Liverpool F.C. and now forms part of Chelsea's squad, forming a golden forward with Didier Drogbar and Nicolas Anelka. Torres is supposed to be the replacemnt for those to who are now in their 30's. The "fuenlabreño" now earns little more than 12M a year from Chelsea F.C. plus revenue from the other advertisements he stars in. Many Liverpool hool's have been infurated by his transfer and some of them burnt a Liverpool t-shirt with his name on it.

Do you think Torres worths that amount of money?

Did Chelsea need another striker like him?

Is the reaction of Liverpool hooligans understandable or acceptable?

  2. I was waiting for someone tu publish an extract with relation to Fernando Torres transfer to Chealsea fc.
In my opinion Torres is not so expensive as 58 million Euros but Chealsea now has one of the best strikers in all the universe, Torres only has to return the great form he got at Liverpool this last 4 years because this last months and year he wasnt lucky with injurys and so on.
Chelsea what they need is a creative midfielder, but they couldnt say no to Torres offer to play in London, but Chealsea after bying Torres theyve already got one of the best forward players on the world such as Didier Drogba or Nicolas Anelka and players with lots of future projection such as Kakuta, so I think that Torres is not so an important player but he will give a lot for Chelsea.
The reaction of the fans from Merseyside I think is correct but at the same time a bit unfair. Its correct because he wanted to go to Chelsea in a difficult Liverpool situation, in my conclusion he had to abandon Liverpool at the end of this season.

  3. I think that the amount of money payed by Chelsea for Fernando torres is a bit expensive. In my opinion Chelsea should have payed for Fernando Torres at least 8 or 9 million eruros less. Fernando Torres is a great striker but the last two seasons he hasn't played at his maximum level.
I know that he has had several injurys but his level has decreased. So as his level has decreased his value in the market should be less.
I agree with Enric that maybe Chelsea doesn't need so much a striker and needs somebody in the midfield, but Chelsea couldn't resist of Torres playing in London.
Also I have to say that Torres in Chelsea will have difficult competitors such as Drogba and Anelka. But I think Torres is perfectly capable to take the position to Anelka.
In addition I think that Torres will work very hard in Chelsea and he will try to do his best for the club.

  4. jack roberts,

This recent transfer only serves to highlight the scandalous amount of money that is now being payed for the services of these young footballers.
It shows how detached football is from the rest of the world and how the investments of rich individuals is creating a chasm between clubs that are trying to run sustainable and self-sufficient businesses to clubs that spend truly scandalous amounts of money on these clubs. At the moment there are no limits on the amount you can spend on wages or players and that has created an unfair playing-field which means teams that overspend such as Chelsea, Real Madrid and Barça are spending above their means indebting themselves and this is perfectly acceptable. That's why I think the new regulations coming in will be good for football as it will make teams spend what they earn and generate creating a more sensible and fair system in which the clubs that create the most money will spend the most. And it will stop these excessive transfers including Fernando Torres moving to Chelsea for 50 million pounds or Cristiano Ronaldo's recent move to Real Madrid for 80 million pounds. So to conclude I believe neither Torres nor any other footballer for that matter is worth those amounts of money which are quite clearly non-sensical.

Moving on to purely footballing terms I think it is a good signing despite the fee as he is a world-class player who is out of form but who will no doubt get back to his best. Also, Chelsea have an ageing squad that needs reinvigorating with some fresh, young, talented players to complement the youngsters coming through the ranks such as Kakuta, Sturridge, McEahran, Van Aahnolt and many others. So he is a clever signing as he has been bought when the Chelsea team is showing signs of breaking up due to the age of the backbone of the team.

The reaction of Liverpool fans is completely over the top as players come and go and there is nothing you can do about it, the romanticism of football has long disappeared as players have no emotional connection to clubs and the whole industry is based around generating, earning, spending money. Be it with transfer fees, high wages or agents getting cuts from transfers. Nowadays you can't be to sentimental about the players playing at your club as they are likely to be kissing the badge of your arch-rivals in little over a year if the amount of money on offer is large enough.

Frankly, this transfer among others shows how much money football generates and how much player-power there now is as they can demand ever larger amounts of money for playing a game. But the true root of the problem is not the player, it is the owners who are in it for the short-ter. Moreover, they are likely to disappear as quickly as they came onto the footballing scene leaving the clubs such as Liverpool, Madrid, M.United and Chelsea severely indebted and with no friendly oligarch or Arab royal family to give them the no-strings attached cash injection anymore. In short they will be brought back to the real world of sensible management that Arsenal have long been inhabiting.

  5. Hi again, many time has past since my last comment.

I really think F.Torres is worth this money beacause nowadays football teams spend a lot of money in their players. But this doesnt take off the money that liverpool spent on hiring Andy Carroll a really noob striker who has done a really perfect year at the premier league.

I think all the football teams make a great decision by hiring F. Torres because he is a really good forward that can help each team to make goals. Roman Abramovich wanted to make a drastical change because Chelsea nowadays is not in champions league positions and that worries him a lot.

I think that the liverpool hooligans reaction is correct because they used to support F.Torres and he was one of their favourite players, they think tha F.Torres only moved for the money and that why now it has become one of their enemies.

  6. Hello, I’m not a great football fan, and I don’t know if Torres is as good player as people say, but come on!, 58.8 million Euros? If he is earning 12M € in a year, that’s about 250,000€ a week! He is earning as much money as most people earn in nearly a decade (according to the average salary in Spain according to EUROSTAT).

So, I think it’s a bit excessive to pay so much for someone, but as I said before, I don’t know about football, or if it’s ok to pay so much money for a player.

Nevertheless, in the context we are: economic crisis, the huge amount of homeless people, and the natural disasters that occur around the world; I don’t really think that it’s the best place to put the money, but of course, that’s not my business.

  7. Firstly,I would like to say that I'am not a great football fan that goes to see every single match and im not entirely sure if this Fernando Torres isn't as good as to be oferred a total amount of 58.8 milion Euros.I found it excessive and exxagerate but I've heard of other players who earn around 90 milion euros like Cristiano Ronaldo.I agree to what Grifols said that in a week they gain more money than any other job in more than a year.

Nextly I would also want to say that losing and putting money in such sport is useless and stupid because it could be used for other things

Hello everyone! It's long ago since i last comment in this blog!

I believe Torres doesn't worth 58M as the majority of us express here, but football is football we can't decide how much is he worth. That's Roman Abramovich decision, or Liverpool's new owners. They are the ones who have traded for this player. In my opinion Torres wouldn't have been that expensive three years ago, although he could have been playing better. Why do I say that? Well I believe that football players vary on their prize by their quality in the football field and by their titles won. Why is he so expensive? Well we don't have to think that much those who are spanish and who have lived in spain since 2008, when Spain won the eurocup final against Germany with Torres scoring the only goal in the final. Two years later we've won the world cup! Although Torres hasn't played well he is Europe and world champion and that puts your prize above other players who haven't.

To the second question I respond YES! Chelsea's squad is getting older and the club has to get younger players. Drogba and Anelka have now passed their 30's. Good players in a good team don't continue if they have more than 34 although there are some exceptions. Abramovich is now bringing young and future promising players who little by little go replacing the older ones. Chelsea has a brilliant team but it's old so they have to renovate and start again with new players. I believe that in less than four years time Chelsea will have a totally new squad with Fernando Torres as its 9.

If I was a Liverpool hooligan i would have not burnt anything! I would have gone to the next match against Chelsea and cheer up my team without insulting Torres. Torres has given much to Liverpool and it's a pitty that he has left Liverpool where he was loved by everyone. But money can with nearly anyone in this world.

Finally I want to state that It's a pain that money controls us and we can lose our head for it! Players don't feel their shirt as they felt it once. In a way pounds, dollars or euros are spoilling our beloved football!

  9. First of all I would like to say that this is a really good post to comment on, (one of the best ones I've seen around this blog).
So, we have a really intense debate here. Torres grew up in Madrid and played for Atletico de Madrid for many years until reaching the point of being the Atletico de Madrid’s hero captain. By that time, Atletico de Madrid was not the team we now of, they didn't have a clear reference on the pitch; so what best than to put a young Spanish boy who came up from the clubs' quarry as team captain? In my opinion, Torres doesn’t have the needed skills to be captain (he doesn’t even have them now so how could he possibly have them when being 19 years old?). I think it now, and I thought it when Torres played in the Spanish League, Torres doesn’t have the profile needed to play in Spain, although he surely has it for the Premier. The Spanish League is world widely recognised as one of the best and most competitive football leagues around the world. Here in Spain we have a really different way of playing football than in the United Kingdom. Spain’s football league style is easier on the eye than England’s, whereas English play a much more physical game where nonsense fouls are avoided. (Here in Spain physical contact is kept to a minimum).
The skills that Torres has are the perfect ones for the Premier League, and that’s why we cannot really judge whether if Torres is or isn’t worth 58M€.
I think Torres is a great player and could possibly cost 58M€, although nowadays, since the Arabic sheiks have bought several Spanish and English teams there is a trend of buying players at a really high price. (From the outside it seems as if they where being scammed). Torres is a perfectly qualified footballer for the English league and that’s why he is one of the best Premier League’s players.
I think many people may think that he is not worth it, but the problem is that Spanish and English have really different ideas about Torres. He has really succeeded at England, even though he didn’t do it in Spain.
To summarize the idea (if it isn’t clear enough), I would think that Torres is worth 58M€ at the Premier League, but not at the Spanish one.

  10. Hello everyone! After finding out about this surprising transfer for the incredible amount of 58.000.000 euros I thought about it and even though I am a great follower of football, I love it and spend a lot of time with it. I concluded that the player prices and their salaries are astronomical.

Football has turned into a very important sport in social life nevertheless it doesn't worth the money it moves, so Fernando Torres doesn't worth this amount of money but inside the artificial market, it could be discussed but in my opinion he isn't that good.

Liverpool was in a deep economical crisis and had to sell this summer some of its best stars like the argentinian Javier Mascherano to FC Barcelona, the "reds" had a bad start this season loosing lots of matches, this two things and the fact that Chelsea was having a crisis of results made possible the transfer.

Liverpool hooligans were upset because they believe Torres acted as a traitor. But with the money of the transfer Andy Caroll and Luis Suarez signed for liverpool and since the transfers Chelsea hasn't won a match and liverpool has won everything so I think that Torres going to london has made a bigger benefit to liverpool.

  11. Fernando Torres is one of the top-quality players in the world. This striker costs the amount of money that was paid for him, 58,5 million and some people think that this transfer is to high, but it’s not. Nowadays the amount of money that is paid for payers is scandalous, but if the player disserves it, it has to be paid. This has made that the price of the market increases. If Abramovich wants to pay this huge amount of money, he pays it because it’s he’s money and he do want he want with it.

In addition, Liverpool supporters have had a crappy reaction towards Torres. They started burning his t-shirts and sing songs against him, this is unbelievable. Torres is the player that has pulled the team up and now, what Liverpool fans should support him because he is a magnificent player that if he would not been playing in Liverpool, this team would be a disaster.

However, now that he is the forward of Chelsea’s team, e would win more cups and increase his titles; this is the main reason why he left Liverpool. Now he is part of a extraordinary team with very skillful players that it would be beneficial for him because now, he would explode as a good player he is.

To conclude, Fernando José Torres Sanz is one of the best nine’s that football has had since nowadays. So the people that opine that the amount of money paid for him is too excessive, they are wrong. He costs 58,5millions or even more, because it’s difficult to find an extremely effective forward. With your money, you can do what you like.

  12. Hi! I don't really know much about football, but I've seen the event in the news recently and I thought: "how fast has he changed sides!" Liverpool and Chelsea have always been eternal rivals and now Torres sells himself so easily to the other side. I didn't think he was like that and he clearly let me down in a way because I thought he would be more faithful to his club, like for example Messi, who has received loads of offers from many clubs who were set to invest millions for him, but he remained cold against those juicy offers and decided to stay in Barça.

However, Fernando Torres is free to do whatever he likes and if he chose to go to Chelsea, he must have a good reson for doing so.

As to the questions, the amount of money he's worth is not relevant for me. It's always the same, football players are obviously paid to much and none of them deserve a part of what they are paid. They are normal people who have a job like anyone in you may see in the street and in spite of this they earn a thousand times more than a normal person. However, that's a subject I don't want to go in now beacause then my comment may last for hours and hours.

I don't really know if Chelsea needs another striker like him and in my opinion the reaction by the hooligans is exaggerated, though they are hooligans and that's what they normally do, if not they wouldn't be hooligans.

  13. I'm very sorry for extreme football fans, but I don't think even the best player is worth more than what a good economist gets payed.

Football has become more a matter of money than a way to entertain nowadays. Club managers want their team to be the best, but what about being payed normal salaries lake most people have.

I never thought i would say this but I, in some way, am starting to hate football. I like to see teams play but, clubs are starting to pay huge and extremely exaggerated amounts of money to get a player. I don't refer to Fernando Torres much because there are lots of players being transferred for less money but even that seems unreachable for many people.

But it is not only because of the money it costs to transfer a player that I'm very annoyed, but what they get payed for playing is also outrageous. Players in the best teams are being payed about 8 to 10 million euros a year, which is what someone should be payed if they were risking their life at least, and even in that situation I think the amounts are unacceptable.

Finally I'd like to say that players also influence when having to be payed. Some are to arrogant and to self-confident which makes them want more and more money.
