TED: Ideas Worth Spreading

I was recently told about a website, ted.com, that contains recordings of video conferences held in California. It's absolutely free and its main objective is to spread ideas that are considered to be very important and relevant for society today.

The conferences held are usually short, about 15 or 20 minutes, and they tend to be amusing as they intend to make people become interested in the subject they're about. It doesn't matter if you are into technology, politics or if you are more interested in the entertainment area; the website contains all type of speeches. From 'understanding the rise of China' to 'what makes us happy?', the website arranges the conferences in main themes, or classifies them into cathegories such as persuasive, corageous, funny, inspiring, fascinating...

Some lecturers are quite well-known, like Steve Jobs, and others are very underrated experts of their area of knowledge. I really do recommend that you take a break from studying, check out some videos and give some feedback on what you learned while watching them or what's your opinion about the website in general. Go to http://www.ted.com/

  1. I really do think is an original and brilliant idea. We don't get to have these kind of conferences here, at least in Barcelona. Specially, it's really good for teenagers like us.

Nowadays we are so lost because there are so many things we have to do like learning, choosing our future path, etc. Work and future are so demanding that we have to clear our minds to actually do something. Speeches like these might let us know more about certain subjects or themes, and therefore give us a better vision of what's around us.

  2. When i first started reading the article i thought the post would be about some weird website that posted videos from which you hardly understood a word. However, as i continued reading and saw that it mentioned the Apple foundator and Chief executive officer, Steve Jobs, i was immediately attracted. I opened a new tab and checked out the website. Although i haven't yet been able to watch any of the videos i know that i definately will.

What is more, i also think it's important to be aware of what is happening around us and to have a wider knowledge about general things such as the ones discussed here. Moreover, from what i've read on the post, the site also offers discussions about the meaning of life which is as well interesting.

Thank you Andrea for sharing this fascinating site with us and i'll make sure to give you feedback with my opinion on it as soon as i have a one.

  3. It's a very interesting idea I hadn't heard of until now! The problem is, in my opinion, that not many people know what TED is, because the brand itself doesn't promote which is the activity that they are doing. It's not like other brands like Apple, BMW, SONY, which we all clearly vinculate to a determined activity. Nevertheless, it's always very difficult to get these type of ideas off the ground as they are not normal products like computers or cars, they are just ideas and activities.

Maybe they could spread themselves through Facebook or other social networks like Twitter, Linkedin, Myspace...

  4. We do have quite a lot to study right now, so I am not going to watch any of those videos today, but I will someday soon, and I will definetely give my opinion on them then, but for now, I would like to give my opinion on the idea of the website in general.

I think that it is an amazing way of letting people know about things which they are actually interested in, even though they sometimes don't know or do not know where to express their opinions.

It is always very good to see experts talking about what they know, and sharing their many ideas about that subject with the rest. But it is also an absolutely positive thing that not only important people speak, but normal people do. Many times society is interested in knowing what people like them think, who are living under the same conditions as them.

The fact that the subjects which they talk about and that the people who participate in the conferencers is so wide, gives poeple who watch the videos a chance of deciding the themes in which they are actually interested in, and of providing feedback if they want to.

Also, it being completely free changes everything. It definetely would not have the same effect on people or the same number of visitors it does at the moment if people would have to pay to give their opinion.

Overall, it looks like something which will have a bigger impact in a near future.
