What will happen the 21/12/12?

There are a lot of theories about what will happen. Here are the most popular ones:

  1. Outer space
  2. Human causes
  3. Natural disaster

  1. -The popular theory about an asteroid crashing into the earth. Is not the first time and it caused the extinction of dinosaurs.
-Inversion of the magnetic poles of the earth. It has happened around 20 times. There's evidence that says is happening nowadays.
-Solar storm. It occurred in1859 and this would affect the technology and in consequence, humans would 'fight' for the things left.
    - Nibiru planet. The extremely elliptical orbit could make it collide with the earth.
  2. -Telomeres. In the tip of the chromosomes there are protective caps called Telomeres. When you become older they become shorter and they produce the appearance of: cancer, Alzheimer, heart attacks... The theory says that each generation they become shorter.
    -Nuclear accident
    -Nuclear war
    -Pandemic
  3. - Volcanic Eruptions
    - Earthquakes
    - Hurricane
    - Tornadoes
    - Tsunamis.

After reading this...

Do you think something will happen on the 21st of december ? What?

If not, how do you think will end the world? When?

  1. This is a very interesting topic, with many points of view. In fact, a few days ago I had a debate about this with my classmates, and everyone had his own opinion, and totally different from the person beside him, but nobody could actually say what’s correct or not, because nobody can really prove anything…

According to these three theories, I think that any of them could happen. But depending on which one of them, the consequences could be reasonable or not. If the first theory took place, the one about the asteroid or the solar storm, as it has already happened to the planet Earth, we could cope with it, and it wouldn’t be very tragic. The third theory talks about natural disasters, and again, this has happened thousands of times, but the consequences may not be solvable, as the world is passing through an economic crisis, and we may not have enough resources to cope with the great number of deaths that there would be, and the disasters that we could find. Finally, the one that I much fear about is the second theory. This one talks about human causes; the humans are the residents of the planet Earth but also the ones who have the greater power to destroy it. Therefore, I would like to stand out, that if the telomeres would start getting too short, and all its consequences would start occurring, this could easily cause the human’s extinction, and this is one of the worst things that can happen. We have to be intelligent, and don’t let us go; with this I want to say that if we see that a nuclear war starts, for any kind of reason or consequence; we have to stop it, before it’s too late.

Answering to your first question, my clear answer is that I don’t know. I believe, or I want to believe, that the world is not going to end next month, but what if it’s true? Everything is a great ‘what if’. I’m also very superstitious, so I’m not one hundred per cent sure that everything is going to continue as it is right now… My personal opinion is that if it’s really true what they said, I don’t think that the world is going to end, because we’re just a month to that date, and we could have observed any kind of symptom; but what I do believe, is that we may witness any kind of disaster, as Gemma said.

How do I think the world is going to end? That’s such a complex question!! Seriously, I had never set out this question to myself; it kind of fears me… I prefer to think of the present, and of the life we’re living now, if there is an end, a cruel or happy ending, it will arrive on its day, for now, I want to keep calm and fortunate. Anyways, if I really had to answer the question, I think that we, the humans, will end with this world. What we’re just doing all day is polluting our planet, and I know that there are loads of ecologic solutions, but they’re certainly not enough; so, as a conclusion, I think that some of the big problems we have such as global warming, will put us an end.

  2. I agree with Carlota that is very difficult to know what will happen and that some of the things have already happened and probably we could cope with. But what if they happen in a different level, with such power they destroy great part of the world? However, the 'mayas' predicted it was going to be a huge change on the 21st of december of this year but they didn't imagine that things will end up like this. From all points of view, I mean, we have a lot of new technology able to observe the universe in case an asteroid came. Also we have made amazing changes in medicine to try to change things like in chromosomes, or treatments for cancer and some illnesses. Finally they also said it could be a change in economy but they didn't know we are already in recession.

In conclusion I think that also people think we are all going to die but they didn't talk about this, they only talked about a change. They also could have stopped writing in this year because they got bored. Or they thought in this year we were going to discover something. But the main two ideas are natural disaster or a change in society. That humans will experiment a physical change or spiritual.
The conclusion of all this things is that they predicted things without having in consideration how we have improved and that nowadays we are able to change a lot of things and we could stop and get away from some natural disasters.
I think that obviously the world will end up in some moment and it could be in some of this ways but if it was really going to happen on the 21st of december we would have some type of evidence because we are only a month from the date.

  3. I agree with both of the comments ahead.

Personally, I think that nothing is going to happen at the 21st of December. A lot of these things were already predicted and nothing happened when they said it would so now the world would not end.
Although I think the end would not finish this year I don't know what is going to happen. The only thing I could say and I am sure is that when the world finishes me and the people I know will be dead, so we don't even realize that something has happened.
What I am also sure about is that the Maya calendar was different of the one that we have, so they predicted this to happen in another time, not now.
Another thing I always think about when talking about this theme is that I everybody knew that the world is going to end, we would do something for protecting us, and we wouldn't study and we would have fun until the 21st. But nobody talks about this, nobody is scared, nobody does nothing for preventing this disaster or some measurement for protect us from this, and for all this reasons I am not worried about this, because I know that nothing is going to happen to us and the world will die someday but not this year.

In a lesson of school we have learned that Earth has changed since we start to investigate and we are expanding and separating, this means that every time we are making us bigger. If this continues like this, I don't know what will happen but what I know is that this is not good for us.

But although I don’t know a lot of information about a prevision of what is going to happen with the world, when is going to be destructed or when its going to end, the important thing is that we are safe and that nothing is going to happen this year. The other details and things we are going to see it through the life, because in a few years I know they will say another date when something is going to happen.

  4. To sart with I would like to say that, from my point of view, I agree with the comments above, sincerely, I do not think the world is going to end in almost one month. There are a lot of different rumors and different ways that could explain the end of the world.

Moreover, I was told that the reason was that the Maya's calendary ended on the 21/12/12, and then I was told by the same person that it was not true, that the calendary did not end on the 21/12/12.

I also think that there are no enough informtaion for us to know if the world is going to end or not, but if I was going the chose one possibilty I would say the volcanic eruptions one because of a video that I saw in which they explained that it was going to happen because the gravity of the world was going to make the earth layers move and scatter.

But I personally think that we, the humans, are going to destroy the world because of our selfishness and our ambition of power.

  5. I agree to a certain extent with the comments above. However, I would like to add my person opinion on the matter as, like Carlota said, we have been discussing and reading on the subject. I do not think that the world will end on the 21st December of this year for various reasons.

To start with, the Maya civilization didn’t actually predict an apocalypsis or anything that can compare to it. They simply decided to stop writing the calendar because they perhaps underestimated human race. In fact, this isn’t at all a bad prediction as we are having to deal with global warming and the scarcity and exploitation of our natural resources.

Furthermore, I would like to point out that if something was bound to happen, at this stage, we would be starting to receive some kind of warnings or we would notice an early “Earth’s metamorphosis” which is clearly not taking place.

In addition, the Maya civilization did only predict the start of a transition period and not necessarily a natural disaster. Some people argue that what they had predicted is the economic crisis and recession that we are having to undergo. Moreover, it is likely for them to have announced this change as we might, at some point, have to change our lifestyle and not let everything work because of money and financial interests.

In conclusion, I do not think that we are going to die from a tremendous geographic disaster or similar. What I do think is that something is going to happen or that from this uncertainty and suffering we will learn to not turn a blind eye on important issues such as human convivence and the planet’s sustainability.

  6. It’s not the first time an ‘end of the world’ has been predicted and, as in all debates, there are two main sides: the one which refuses the theory and the one which supports the theory of the catastrophe. I’ll now bring up some arguments for each of Gemma’s questions for this disturbing issue and then finally give my overall opinion.

Answering to the first question about what I think will happen on the 21st, I personally think that if something happens it won’t be something such as an asteroid or those kind of things, as, as previous comments said, we would already had seen some evidence of it. Maybe the prediction of this end wasn’t referring to an apocalypse but maybe to a possible and extreme limit such as even a greater global crisis or a war or something significant such as a terrorist attack. In any case, Mayans didn’t specify this end, this is something we have been making up based on our fears, as they only mentioned the end of a fifth stage moving into a really different one which could be either better or worst. To calm people down, scientists have also discarded possibilities by proving they can’t happen as there is no evidence at all about them or anything to rely on, for example:

    • The collision with the planet Nibiru – Mayans believed there was this planet known as ‘Nibiru’ or ‘Planet X’ but this collision is actually impossible as there is no such planet.

    • The impact of a giant asteroid – 65 million years ago, an asteroid caused a massive destruction leading dinosaurs to their extinction, so yes, it can happen again, but astronomers at NASA have a record on all asteroids or any harmful impact that the Earth can suffer and they haven’t seen anything as threatening as the one 65 million years ago. This information is available to the public, so anything can be hidden to us if that is what people might think of.

    • A geomagnetic reversal - this is a change in the orientation of Earth's magnetic field, so, the magnetic positions of the north and south poles exchange. In fact, these events can last from hundreds to thousands of years, and nothing indicates that something as this will happen in matter of days.

But there’s also some things Mayans have gone right with such as:

    • Their prediction of: ‘Great Birds will come from the sky and end a great city to the north at 9/11/01’ which amazingly matches the fact that two airplanes (birds) crashed into the twin towers of New York, a great city to the north.

According to your second question about how I think the world is going to end, I believe it will end naturally as everything as it has a cycle in which it appeared and will finally die. Humans are facilitating this end by making it quicker by pollution and other factors we all now but don’t care too much, but despite it, the end of the world will happen in a lot of time as it is estimated that the sun is right now at the middle of its life approximately, so we’ve got at least all of this time that the Sun has been existing until it definitely dies, then, the world won’t be possible without it.

In any case, Mayans may be right about a possible change, but in any case an environmental one as some evidence would have been already found. It is the end of a stage and the beginning of a new era according to them, so as their prediction with the twin towers, something similar to that could happen or maybe a great change for humanity both politically or culturally. I don’t believe something else can happen as I’m more prone to believe scientific facts before anything based on superstitions.

  7. This topic is quite interesting; therefore there are many different points of view.

We as human being are able to see this in a day-to-day basis as whenever you expose this topic to your debate companions you can see a huge variety of different opinions influenced by many different and varied things.
Personally I think that all of the three theories are unreliable. The fact that something has already happened does not mean it must happen again, what’s more in some cases the fact that something has happened once means that it will not happen again.
To start with I would like to say that the Maya calendar, does not finish the 2012-12-24. The Maya calendar just stops because as none of the Maya would arrive with life to that time why continue writing? As a consequence they then decided to finish the year 2012 and not write longer.
I as well think that humanity has developed a lot since Maya times so what could have been considered a geographical catastrophe in those times could now be considered as something normal or at least as something easy to deal with. Time flies by with extreme quickness and our technological improvement is happening in a very rapid way meaning that it is not reliable to trust a theory established so many years ago.
Nowadays I think the only thing we should fear is the damage humans make to ourselves, we are like rats biting their own tail just for the interest of some few…

  8. I don't really think that the world will end on the 21/12/12 for many reasons, but my heavier statement is that life cannot end because the Mayan people said it thousands of years ago without any scientific statements.
This thought was invented by modern culture in order to make money out of it. As we can see many films, books and merchandising has been made following the event. This shows that the people want to make money out of the feeling of this feeling of fear and naivety.
Years have passed away and many of this convictions have emerged and all of them where inventions so and can't see the reason why this shouldn't be. If we really want to die there are many other ways.
The only think that I'm convinced of is the fact that human beings will die someday, but without being a scientific, I can't see any reasons for it in the early future. Maybe I can say that now, in our society, we are doing many things that aren't ethical, such as the massive usage of CO2. On the other hand this usage of fossil fuels is making us evolve much quicker making us a specie that is being every day a little bit more intelligent.
In conclusion I want to say that if in the unlikely event of the ending we have to be able to look at our past and be proud of what we did and how. If not use your last hours in order to change that negative dynamic.
