Spain: Deficient in Education

There are many young people who, in the past years, have placed Spain in the top of sporting success. However, unfortunately we can’t say the same when talking about compulsory education. Also in this, Spain leads the European ranking: champion in school failure. According to data gathered by UNESCO, one out of every four Spanish young people aged between 15 and 24 left school before completing their basic education. This fact is utterly jaw-dropping. Moreover, the Spanish average of school failure is higher than in Europe, where there is a much lower school drop-out rate: 1 out of 5. If sporting success causes so much social pride, these dismal facts should certainly disturb all of society.

There are no ifs and buts, this is extremely serious! In a country so affected by the economic crisis, where unemployment exceeds 25%, is such a big bag of people with a minimum formation sustainable? What image do we give to the rest of the world with such a high rate of the so called “nini”?

Furthermore, I invite you, as students, to express what do you think is the cause of this issue? Do you believe that the Spanish system has flaws or, on the contrary, is an efficient system?

P.S: Judging on what you’ve read I personally think that advocating the last option does not make much sense…

  1. Of who is the fault? When we talk about school failure, eyes are focused much on the character of youth, how they have grown, and how are they goals and ambitions compared to the previous generation. But the blame cannot rest only on the children, because, we are victims of an educational model that does not quite fit the times. A Chinese proverb says that "if the student is not better than the teacher, bad is the student and neither the teacher" It is true that the level of students is less than what we expect, but it is probably also true that the level of teachers could be higher. I'm not saying that teachers are not prepared, but how to teach should change, according to me there is an important lack of motivation which should be reconsidered.
It is necessary to say that the role of the parents it’s essential in the education of a child. So education should start at home and motivation as well.
I completely agree with you, when you say that it is extremely serious, because we are playing dice with our future. How would we be the generation of the future, if we even think in our own future?

  3. Nowadays I consider education the most valuable inversion that people can make towards their future. Acquiring knowledge about several subjects, learning at least two languages and, of course, attain skills when working in group are some of the tools which are essential to achieve success in the modern society. Therefore I think that Spain has to bear in mind how having a poor and inefficient educational system will have a negative effect on its international image and its own economy.
Firstly to solve this problematic issue we have to find the main cause and the factors that influence those causes. Personally I suggest that the main quandary here is the fact that the students don’t feel motivated at all. In other words, the method used in our country is based on very traditional and conventional procedures that limit in excess the pupil’s capability of developing their own abilities.
In these days schools in Spain institute an examination system founded on mainly long, heavy exams. Hence this means that other skills such as creativity and oral expression, which are extremely important too, are not taken in account whereas memory is the only thing that’s tested in educational institutions.
Remarkably the government must find as soon as possible an alternative to this unproductive method of teaching. We can’t keep on having such an exponential rate of “ninis” as I am sure that in our nation there’s a gigantic amount of potential which developed in the correct way can lead Spain into a bright and promising future.

  4. Spain is well-known around the world mostly for the excellence of sports and its amazing infrastructure, which make this country be recognized in an extraordinary way. Even though Spain has its advantages, education is definitely one of the worse factors affecting the development of this country. If one of every four students drops out of school before finishing basic education, how would they want their country to get out of the terrible crisis that is going on? People should take consciousness and try to do everything to end with school failure, putting on more effort and setting goals to reach in their future.

One important cause of this issue may be not only the students, but also the teachers. Teachers of schools and universities around Spain may not be as qualified as others around the world, leading education to fail even more. The country should try to improve education by bringing more teachers abroad so that students can grow up having more knowledge and inspiration to reach higher. On the other hand, bringing teachers from other countries is extremely hard for Spain because of the unemployment that is extremely high and the expensiveness, having already a crisis.

Furthermore, the government should seriously try to make changes to improve the education; one of the only ways to do this is changing the system. One of the reasons of school failure in Spain may be caused because of this, from which the government should really analyze if another system could be more efficient. In my opinion, this will make the development of Spain increase, because for example the system of the United States has made the country have total success, and having it may also lead this country to get out of this extremely important issue.

  5. As we all know, nobody can be perfect in all aspects. Let me express myself. I support, that although Spain is doing bad in education, is the best country in lots of the most important sports, remarking football. So although other countries make fun of us because they have a better education, we can make fun of them because we are better in sports than them. This is a very idiot thing, but nowadays, being good at sport is a very positive thing, and sometimes still better than having an excellent education.
So Alex, we can be worst in one things, but surely we are better in other things. No worry, it’s better having an education although it’s worst and having lots of sports to have a good time. Than having an excellent education, but being always bored and don’t having any good time.

  6. Spain is a very important country all around the world, even though actually there is an important economic crisis which affects the country. As some classmates have said, Spain can’t be good in all the aspects, because every country has some defects.
But education is very important in a country, as it decides the category of the future of a person. Spain leads the European ranking: champion in school failure. According to data gathered by UNESCO, one out of every four Spanish young people aged between 15 and 24 left school before completing their basic education. This is a really negative fact because this young people, in a future, won’t be able to get a good job, as they don’t have the basic studies required in many jobs, and their future gets reduced in many aspects.
For example, in a future they won’t be able to go to a different country and have a wealthy live, because when they were students they abandoned their studies and went to work. But in some cases it’s not their fault, because if a person doesn’t have enough money sometimes they are oblied to work to help to maintain their families, but this situations are a minority of population.
