Are we Facebook or is Facebook a part of us?

More than half of the people who have a Facebook profile (53%), would rather lose one of their senses, (eg. smell) rather than having to give up surfing this social network.

This was revealed by a study by McCann Worldgroup company of 7,000, users aged between 16 and 22, including in this survey countries like Spain, Britain, United States, Mexico, Brazil, India and China. The report's conclusion is clear and unanimous: most of these Internet users would feel isolated without the technology.

According to the director of the specialized agency who's responsible for carrying out this research, Laura Simpson, afirms that technology is "the world's great unifier, the glue that compacts generations and gives them energy and motivation ". Youngsters perceive that Web links are "infinite knowledge, friends and entertainment opportunities," she adds.

For that reason, analysts are not surprised that connection is more important for the kids than "experiences." Social networks like Facebook, Twitter, Myspace and others cause that almost one in two participants in this study (47%) want the others to remember them for their contacts. This global survey is presented to today's youth as a "strategic generation", which manages different identities, evaluates the functionality of the relationship he has digitally and dispose of those not interested.

Does this sound familiar to you?
Would you give up your senses in order not to have your Facebook account deleted?

  1. I agree that lots of people are quite dependable on Facebook or their social network but in my opinion is a bit exaggerated to say that someone would prefer to lose a sense before losing their Facebook account.
    Why do I mean this?
Facebook, Twitter and other social networks are considerably new and people lived perfectly without them before. Yes is true that has improved communication between friends and people who you are looking for but we shouldn't start becoming crazy, what is kind of an enjoyable activity could end up in an addiction and this would be depreciable due to people would be less sociable with each other if there's no a computer in front.
As a conclusion I would like to express myself saying what we should do in order to stop Facebook of being an addiction. People should use it carefully and, if we can see it is becoming an addiction, government or Facebook owners should put limits so that society stays similar to what is now, that, in my opinion it is ok due to we have new technology but we (unless "mad" people) know how to use it with moderation.

  2. These are shocking news!

I am glad to be part of the 47 % of Facebook users who give more value to their senses than to their social network, and I hope this never changes! However, I admit having a need for “connection”, as most of teenagers nowadays do. Social networks were once an opportunity and are gradually becoming a necessity, like many other inventions have in the past.

In my opinion, social networks are not as good for us as they seem. We should always be able to control our use of them, before they end up controlling us.

  3. I created my facebook profile two years ago. As I developed and started analysing carefully what and who is and should be part of my life, I realised how meaningless Facebook really is. Although it has grown to be one of the most usefull on-line networks, we don't actually have such a great need for it... but for some reason it seems we do. That's why I deleated my profile at the beggining of the year; to check what difference it would make, and if i'd feel the tremendous absence. And I did, so I created a new profile the very next day. But this time I took some things in consideration... like having your life open like a book for hundreds of people to look and judge.

  4. Nowadays, Facebook, like other social networks, has become one of the most visited webpages worldwide. The majority of people, especially the young ones, have a Facebook account, as this has many advantages such as quick communication with friends who might live far away, or maybe for some, it’s an entertainment.
The fact that many people depend on Facebook and connect to it every single day of their lives is nothing new, it is something that we are getting familiarised to, but wanting to lose one sense in order to avoid deleting Facebook, in my opinion, is going to an extreme.
Personally, I would never give up one of my senses for Facebook, as we depend on our senses to survive, and on the other hand, Facebook is useless to us. I mean, maybe about ten years ago, people lived without Facebook and had no necessity to use a social network.
In conclusion, every day there’s more people joining Facebook and getting addict to it, which from my point of view, is quite sad, as communicating with people face to face and doing outside activities is much more enjoyable than sitting in a chair in front of a computer by yourself.

  5. After reading this post I realised that it is true that most of us are too addicted to Facebook. I mean, I’m sure that most of us have to look at Facebook everyday, now it has become into an ordinary routine and we aren’t aware of how it is affecting us and how we are depending on it more and more. Facebook is the easiest and cheapest way to keep in touch with your friends and talk to them constantly as well as sharing different links.

So this has made us be dependable on Facebook, however, I think that it’s also too exaggerated, because it can also end up being boring and I’m sure that if we at least tried we could perfectly leave it to one side and continue with our normal lives without any type of problem. Well, maybe at the start because you change your routine but then you’ll realize that there are a great amount of things that you can do instead of staying all day in front of the computer looking at other people’s photos on Facebook.

That’s another point too, having a Facebook account also means having other responsibilities because we have to be careful with what we post or upload, as internet is everywhere and you never know who can see your photos or your information, and this can lead to end up being a dangerous social webpage after all.

  6. I’ll have to admit that I was once part of big that percentage, facebook used to play an important part in my life, I had to constantly check in order to make sure that I wasn’t missing from anything important, but throughout the years I managed to let go of it and focus on things which were a lot more useful and important, I took conscious about it and learned that facebook was taking my time from things that I really enjoyed, and I realized I was missing a whole lot of things outside from this tiny screen which didn’t allow me to extend my horizons. I was stuck in my own world.

Facebook has a lot of advantages and facilities which allow us to have easy contact with almost anyone but as Carla said we should take facebook seriously as most of the teenagers don’t realize the negative impact of Facebook on their life. And, the main reason is because they are already addicted to it. And, this addiction can lead to several negative developments.

Moreover I would like to say that facebook will also cause your real-world social interaction to diminish. There is no doubt that you’ll have hundreds of friends on Facebook, but with how many of them would you be interacting out in the real world. As a human being, you are a social creature and you naturally require real-world social interaction. When you are going to spend maximum of your time on the Internet, you are going to decrease your communication and social skills.

In addition another negative impact will be on your health. There is a very high chance that excessive use of Facebook leads to the users becoming obese. You would be sitting most of the time in front of the computer, eating snacks and without any physical activities. And, over a period of time you are going to accumulate all the extra pounds.

Facebook is also going to minimize your study time. Rather than spending your time on Facebook, you would better start browsing some educational sites that relate to your school course.
For Facebook users, family don’t come first, but Facebook does. For them their online friends are more important than their family members.

But ill have to admit that nowadays I would never change one of my senses for facebook, I’ve learn to balance my life, having both facebook and a non-technological social life. There are things more important in life which complete me in all aspects and makes me free from the dependence of facebook.
