BASKETBALL ADDICT

Have you ever been addicted to a sport? Have you ever liked one so much that your whole life turns around it? Well, young Maggie Meier has. The American girl suffered a brain inflammation and unfortunately fell into a coma. She remained in this state of paralysis nearly 3 months, while being moved every 3 o 4 days in order to keep her muscles as stronger as possible. Her family improvised a basketball hoop, knowing her favourite hobby, and their surprise was when she until she started throwing and scoring fouls shots while being in coma. The doctor supervising her state said that this acts were a result of her passion for basketball, as she has adopted this movements as a basic instinct.

It is amazing how she had the instinct of throwing a ball before speaking or even walking just because she really enjoyed this sport, don’t you think so?

  1. As a big fan of basketball I think that it is amazing to see a teenager so passionate about a sport such as basketball.

On the other hand I find that it is a curious case where sport helps the girl to improve and overcome this coma as it keeps your muscles strong, yet it is very rewarding to see that this situation has brought back joy to her parents because they see that their daughter is making great progress in being able to play with the ball and score while living in a totally unconscious state.

This is an example of how sport can help people overcome with some muscular problem, illness, etc. This girl is a memorable example of how important a sport can be in the life of someone till the point of helping her improve and end up with this state of coma. I think this girl is a pride for the world of basketball and I hope she is totally recovered in order to play again and train till she gets to be a great player!

I agree with Marina in this case, I think this is a memorable example of how can sport be so important for someone, up to the point that it’s helping her progress in her situation.
What’s more, I couldn’t even imagine that this could happen so I’m really impressed by the news and I think the girl deserves an award, apart from, of course, recover from her coma. It’s really hard to believe, the passion of this girl towards basketball has to be so hard it’s absolutely mind-bending!
In conclusion, the only thing I can add is...
    GOOD LUCK!

  3. I agree with both Marina and Miguel because it’s a clear example of how sports can help recover someone during specific treatments. It’s absolutely astonishing what passions can do and especially in this case. It truly defines the love for a particular hobby and the dedication spent, not just to get better but simply because it’s an activity you enjoy.
However, I have to say that I didn’t quite understand a part of this happy story. I’m not sure if the girl had woken up or she was still in coma when she threw the ball. If so, I find very curious and even fascinating how such thing could have happened. Definitely a case to be examined and studied. If this is the opposite way, it’s still amazing that as Marina said, she did it before even speaking or walking. Furthermore, all basketball players should stop for a second and realise what this sport can do in some cases and how they are partially responsible for miracles like this one.
In our society, sports are being use even more each time, to help cure physical and psychological illnesses. It means giving the patient many things such as: working in teams, relaxing, releasing your stress and as regards to physical aspects, each sport can work a different part of your body.
Personally I think countries should invest in sport facilities as everyone can benefit from them, not only the professional sportsmen. It’s necessary as it's a mean of leisure and it helps you keep a healthy life. Thanks to this, this girl will hopefully recover doing what she likes best.

  4. I'm not quite sure if I understood the post correctly, what I imagined was that the brain inflamation was produced because of her passion for basketball, which, in this case would be quite negative so I wouldn't agree with anyone of my class mates. If that's what happens, I think that the passion for a sport should be measured by parents and relatives.

People surrounding extreme fans, should be careful that this love for the sport don't become in madness or whatever.
Following a sport, as being addict to many things can be very fructiferous if it’s done carefully and people surrounding this kind of people should be aware of dangers this could produce, imitating dangerous things they're favourite players do...

However, I would like to think I interpreted wrong this post and think the same as my mates which is, in little words, incredible!

  5. I completely agree with Marina, this girl is a pride for the basketball sport. I am really amazed that someone is capable of throwing a basketball being in the state of comma rather talking to their familly or eating or just opening their eyes... I have never heared such a thing before. If this girl didn’t have this passion about this sport, she maybe wouldn’t have given any signs of life, and the doctors might of thought that she was about to die or that she would never recover.

If she was able to throw basketballs in her state of health, I’m sure that she will be fine by now and that her life has gone back to normal. Her muscles must be very strong as she is a person that has to be continuously active, and this is what helped her to recover. This case shows us how important it is to keep fit and take care of your health because if suddenly one day you have a problem like this girl, you’ll be able to go back to your normal life without any problems.
