Man hangs his own painting in museum

A Polish art student didn't want to wait decades for his art to be appreciated so he decided to hang his painting in the Polish National Museum.

Andrzej Sobiepan expresses that art galleries should leave more space for upcoming artists such as him. He said "I decided I didn't want to wait 30 or 40 years to see my piece of art in a place like that".

Director of the National Museum in Wroclaw, Mariusz Hermansdorfer, said he treated the campaign as a joke and has kept the painting on display - in the museum's café.

Do you think he should've been punished? Is it fair for other artists? On the other hand, do you think what he says about museums leaving more space for upcoming artists?

  2. This news article didn’t surprise me at all because as this polish man’s case there are thousands of other artists who are trying, by all the means, to open up to the world so that we can appreciate their art and they can expose their talent.

I don’t think he should be punished; in fact, the museum should apologize to him, as painting is a free way of expressing your feelings, so the museum should provide amateur and new artists a room for them and for us to enjoy their upcoming talent.
I personally don’t think the other artists who already have a name in the industry and are recognized worldwide you be offended and feel it’s not fair. They should look back into the past and see that all beginnings are tough and hard and they would have probably appreciated this opportunity if they had been given the chance.

All the museums should help and give an opportunity to these artists as the public might really like it and it’s good to break the rules for once and experience something new and fresh, something different to the classic master pieces recognised by everyone.

  3. What you thought Maria is actually the same thing I thought. More space should be provided for amateur, upcoming artists. If they aren't given a space they will all soon get fed up and possibly stop painting.
At least there should be a room only for new artists in every museum (not necessarily in museums dedicated to an artist in particular such as Miró...). I was happy to see you reacted the way I did when I read the article :).

  4. If we look beyond and even deeper than only Reading this article we can appreciate that there is so much unprofitable talent thrown away in our society as many painters need to wait till their 40´s to get some income so that they have already have a steady public which can buy their paintings. Many of them need to change jobs if they want to have a better life as no money comes in many years if you’re a painter. A painter only remains if he is extraordinary brilliant or if he has enough money to live without selling a piece of art.
In this case, this painter might have had economic problems as he didn´t sell any of his paintings by a fault of audience or marketing and he might have been in the anonymity for a long time and throwing many tantrums as a personal feeling of incapability he has resolved this problem by making an illegal act in my opinion.

  5. I totally agree with the statement above because in my opinion real artists should be recognised from the very first moment they create a piece of art. Moreover, I believe that there is many people with lots of talent that their art isn’t valued enough. Thanks to Andrzej Sobiepan’s illegal action, he has been recognised worldwide, this means that he has succeeded with his objectives of becoming famous.

In this case, I don’t think that he should be punished although for further arts being displayed illegally the Director of the Museum should, because it’s not fair for the other artists who have worked really hard on becoming a well-known one to be excluded.

To control such revelations I would consider in displaying a certain amount paintings from unknown people. Therefor, the number of people doing this kind of things would decrease and maybe even the Museum would be happier due to many customers going to visit it just to see these paintings. Nowadays, if you want to see a painting of Van Gogh, Botticelli or Leonardo da Vinci you just have to look through the Internet whereas with this upcoming artist you would just find them in the Museum.

  6. Before judging if what this polish art student has done is correct or not, I would like to remind you of great painters as Vincent Van Gogh, a real genius in art history who lived all his life ruined because he was not able to sell his paintings, no one considered his art and did not recognize his majesty until many years after his death. And as him, there are many examples throughout history.
My point is, giving this example that not many artists can show to a public their art because they do not know the right person that can help in the development of their art career, and therefore do not have the same opportunity as other artists who do know important people that work in museum, galleries…
I totally agree with what the polish artist says about museums, they should all provide the artists, who they consider appropriate, a room for them just to expose one of their paintings and so people get to know them and the museum could observe people´s reactions. As maybe one of the paintings succeeds and the artist gets the chance to have his own room to expose his paintings, as it would also be beneficial for the museum.

  7. I understand both Maria and Luis’s point but I don’t share their opinion. It’s true that many artists in history have been unable to see their art pieces in a museum before their death, pieces which have ended up being globally recognized and appreciated. However, I can’t be open to the idea of placing paintings in a well-known museum showing such indifference towards the art piece, as the feeling of seeing your piece of work would be nowhere near as pleasing as the one artists feel once their work has been accepted. Moreover, the quality of the museums would rapidly decrease until arriving to the point where anyone’s art would be worth admiring. Andrzej Sobiepan took a very risky decision when placing his art work in a museum without it having been accepted, and I consider this action quite selfish as he shows an immature attitude knowing that other artists have been waiting for years to see a piece of their work in a museum.

I find Nicole’s idea of displaying a certain amount of unknown paintings interesting, as accepting art from casual people who can’t be compared to historical artists may stimulate young artists which dream with being recognized at some point and can also give a modern style to museums. What’s more, the ones who are able to point out at their work in a museum will certainly feel on top of the world and, as Marina point’s out, may turn out being famous artists. However, these paintings should be selected by the museum.

Everyone should have an opportunity to succeed in the artistic world, however that opportunity can’t be rushed by forcing your art to be appreciated so quickly intending to place it in a recognized museum and pretend achieving success.

  8. I agree with Maria's point of view in relation with this new article, as lots of artists are trying really hard to mae their work appreciated.

However, I like to stick to Ana's point that artists should not rush their work, or force it to appear in art galleries or museums. I think that if the piece of art that has been composed is considered as being amazing or a maister piece it shouldnt be forced to be exposed to the public.
Moreover, I think there is no need to judge the fact for judgind whether the Polish's man acts are correct or not, but museums should start thinking about giving opportunities to new-born artists that would like to be well-known at some point in their life.

  9. Art is the concept that covers all creations made by human being to express a sensitive view of the world, whether if real or imaginary. From linguistic to artistic resources, including sound, art allows to express ideas and emotions, perceptions and feelings.

Having said this, my opinion towards art is totally open, as art should be free and inspiring for everyone. I can understand, having read the comments above, the concern felt towards the Andrej Sobiepan’s move to be considered rather selfish and unfair for others. However, art is nowadays a profession or hobby which may be hard to succeed on, for example having to meet with personal objectives as signing a contract with a museum in order to show the world your own abilities and talents. For that reason I totally understand Andrej’s attitude towards his act, art should be exposed and displayed to everyone.

Finally, his act should not, in my opinion, be punished or feed, as new artists should have to have more opportunities in the artistic world in order to achieve prosperity, both the art’s and the artist’s.
