Sarah actually killed the burglar, Justin Shane Martin, aged 24, after confirming with the operator of the emergency services by saying: "I've got two weapons, ¿Can I kill him if he crosses that door?"
"You should do whatever you have to do to protect yourself" responded the operator "I can't tell you that you can do that, but you have to do whatever's necessary to protect your baby". Then, the operator heard the shot of a gun.
The police found Justin's body with a knife in his hand lying on the floor besides the sofa. The authorities established that Sarah, who's husband died on the 25th Dec. 2011 of cancer, had acted in self defence and she will not be investigated.
Poor Sarah had the worst Christmas holidays in her life.
So, do you think that Sarah had to act the way she acted? Would you have acted any differently? Should she be put in jail for killing a man?

That’s Amazing. On one hand I think she was on the right track calling the emergency Services and asking that before acting, that was a good decision, on the other hand, I don’t really know if the way she acted was the right one, but It’s my bet that if I was in that situation I would get so panicked that I would not know what to do to protect my baby and myself. But from where I sit, she was probably nervous and his husband was probably sick by then, so trying to protect their selves is something that human being do to survive so she shouldn’t be in jail for what she did , and I think it’s absolutely normal (and right) that she will not be investigated.

I totally agree with Alejandra when she considers that the correct way of acting was immediately consulting the Emergency Services, as it was surely the right thing to do. Also, the fact the thief was trying to get into her home, obviously caused her to panic, as her main aim was to protect her baby. Because of this, we can consider her action was reasonable, having in mind that all she wanted was to act in self-defense and not with bad intentions. So, as her only opportunity was to kill the thief to stay alive, she found herself in the point of no return: she killed him, o he would end her life and her son’s.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, when you find yourself in situations such as this one, you are only able to act being guided by your instinct and you impulses, so it is difficult to predict the way in which you would react. However, I surely know that finding myself in a similar situation I would do whatever I could in order to safe my son’s life, even if that means killing a man. For this reason, I think that she should not be investigated nor menaced to be put into jail, as she only acted in self-defense.

I am totally flabbergasted with this incident; I can’t believe things go this way in America, which now a days is the more powerful country in the world and the one that actually rules our planet. In my opinion, the fact that you can do whatever you need to defend yourself is totally shameful, people shouldn’t be able to take someone else’s life under no circumstances.
ReplyDeleteAccording to this law, if someone comes into your house with any metal object in his hand, you could kill him and state that he was going to harm you with it, which is totally unfair. This will lead people to buy a gun and keep it in their house to use it whenever they want, and in the moment in which you have seen someone entering your house, most people would probably get too nervous, and in the situation of not knowing what to do, the usual reaction is get the gun and shoot the person.
After this, two possible things can happen. It can either be an actual thieve who would have actually harmed you, or it could be someone else who for any good or necessary reason has entered your property just for one moment and has actually received a shoot and may have died.
So, do I agree with this woman not being investigated? The answer is clearly negative. Besides I think they should change this law, as it is not appropriate in a develop country with such power. Therefore, I think that this woman should be at least investigated for his acts and in the case of being an action of nervousness and not an action of self-defense, she should be put into prison immediately.

I can't believe it!
ReplyDeleteI also agree with Alejandra with the fact that she was in the right track calling emergency services. But if i were her I would've called them or the police to ask for help, not just an opinion.
Again, if i were to be in her situation, i would have panicked too. I
would have also wanted to protect my baby and would have done anything in order to make sure she was to be all right.
I think there is no reason to put the girl in jail, but, as David Vilalta said she should be at least investigated as her acts are a bit suspicious.

First of all I must agree with Alejandra, when she says that the proper immediate response to this situation was what Sarah did by calling the emergency services. But I must also add that this is not a thing that can be accomplished easily. Usually our mind and actions are blocked by fear, and this may hold us back from acting in a reasonable and thoughtful way. This can also cause us to react in a certain way due to the pressure we are dealing with.
ReplyDeleteSecondly I must express my understanding in Sarah’s position, as a mother, the only possible thing she could be thinking of at that time must have been the fact of keeping safe her baby, and she didn’t care what that may cost her. She would’ve done anything for the baby, and I admire and respect that. I don’t judge her for having killed a man, because she did it for the safety of her child, although I don’t agree on the fact, that what she did was the best solution, I think it was the best thing she was capable of doing under so much pressure.
Finally I wanted to agree with David, because even though we don’t share the same thoughts, I do think this case should be investigated, but she shouldn’t be sent to jail, because she was protecting her baby’s life and her own one too.
