A dance around the world

What would you do if you visited a different country?

A man called Matt who started with nothing, has now produced one of the most viewed videos on youtube, making him a well-known and wealthy man.
Matt decided to take a trip around the world and dance in front of important monuments, having people of that particular city/village/area accompany him.
In only four minuts we travel thoughout the whole planet, getting to know many beautiful places we didn’t even know existed. More importantly, we get to see many different cultures and life styles.
It is amazing how in such a small world we are all the same and yet we are so different. We all have different skin colour, wear distinctive clothes, are raised differently...
I mean, what does Jordan have to do with the Netherlands? What about Brazil and India? Mali and Japan?
We all live in different places and are surrounded by different people, yet we all have that same enthusiasm of dancing in front of a camera.

A photographer called Jock Sturges once said:
“Different members of different cultures will think that some things are beautiful.”

Do you agree with this statement? Are we really worlds apart or are we truly similar? What do you think about different cultures? Do they appeal to you? What did this video make you feel, and what has it meant to you?

This video was filmed and “launched” in the year 2008. Ever since his first success Matt has been travelling around the world, creating a new video each year.

  1. I personally can't fully agree or disagree with this statement.
In one hand I believe that everyday situations and the education you receive is what helps and influences you to build up opinions and a way of seeing the world and therefore the culture you have live in is the one you understand. What I suggest with this is that part of our standards of beauty may have its source on what we have been taught.

On the other hand I also think that if you try to understand and empathise with what is different from you, you will find out that what makes us different is tiny compared with what brings us together and that aspect of recognizing beauty is not determined by our culture is determined by our brain which is utterly similar.

Look at it this way, start looking at what all have in common and you might come to the conclusion that after all we are far too likely to be considered different and that a part of beauty depends on how you look at things.
In conclusion we don't think differently is what this video made me think.

  2. I am absolutely sure that if I visited another country I would not being dancing in the middle of the street.

When I first saw this video I had a chill, I thought “WOW, what a video!” and the thing is that this video really shows a lot of things: Different places, different traditions, different types of people, different atmosphere and the different ways of leaving and being shy or wanting to dance with Matt.

As Alexia says, this video is making us travel all around the world in just a few seconds.

Also, I know from the experience that we are truly similar. Although we have different ways of living, different cultures, different languages, different ways of talking, expressing ourselves and living we are actually all similar between us.

  3. It’s brilliant the way in which Matt has shown different cultures and lifestyles in only 4 minutes of video just by dancing!
There’s a similar video created by the famous cologne brand called Johnson’s Baby, which has recorded 4 babies from 4 different countries and totally different ways of living. Again we can see the things they have in common and the ones they haven’t.

Referring to the statement of the post, I totally agree with it, especially because a photographer has said it, which means that it’s very probable that he has experienced the situation of some people belonging to different cultures having liked his piece of art. In a photograph someone can like it or not, it doesn’t matter whether you’re from one culture or another; it’s just about a personal point of view towards something. In my opinion, despite every human being has been raised in different situations, we’re very alike because without knowing each other we have common things such as having similar feeling like love, the same emotions and even learning how to communicate with others by speaking or writing.
I have the same argument as Alejandra because we both agree that we are all similar.Different cultures means different ways of living and I think that it’s great to have a big range of them. This way you can learn many things from each and take what you like most of them and use their traditions in your day-to-day life.

  4. I couldn't agree less with that photographer. Whatever we don't know will suprise us, those different cultures are the ones who'll amaze us. This is a vital part of the video, what's new. All those places are new, now a days suprising a child is easier with that video than with a machine.

I would also like to write about the debate I read upwards about us, people in earth. Are we similiar or are we different? Although they are both true there is one in which I personally prefer.

There is not a single person identical to another, we are ALL different. Doesn't that make us similar? Let's face it eventhough the huge amount of religions, cultures, races, personalities and values in the whole world we are in part united. Our hearts work the same way, an asian can fall in love with a african, it is possible. We ain't no different species.

My point is we do have differences and similarities. But we are more alike than anything else. Isn't this video the perfect example? Every landcape is different, every little way of living or acting, the simple clothes they ware. But wait, what are they doing? DANCING. They all feel the same happiness while they let their body go, dispact half planet sepates them. It isn't about finding our differences it is about being united and connecting every piece of this gigntic puzzle. This man has deepend into different cultures hearts. And how? just dancing. Isn't that a way of saying: We are not so different after all?
