Have you got an accent?

This video took YouTube by storm. Amy Walker talks you through 21 different 'Englishes' spoken from London to New Zealand.

  • Which accent do you prefer?
  • Are any 'terrible', 'annoying' or 'sexy'?
  • Do accents matter?
  • Are you embarrassed by your Spanish accent or proud of it?
  • Is there an accent that you'd like to be able to speak with?
To find out more about the 'real' woman behind the video, visit her website http://www.AmyWalkerOnline.com  or watch her explanatory video.

To learn some differences between American and English slang, watch Hugh Laurie from House (and  before that, Jeeves and Wooster) and Ellen Degeneres (well-liked American Chat Show Host).

  1. Hello!

I have to confess myself that when I so both videos I couldn’t stop laughing.

The first video with the woman using different accents to say the same phrase was amazing, she could even difference the accents of each state of America! I really liked the Californian accent, as it sounds cheerful and sweet.
On the other hand, I personally think that the Australian accent sounds awful as the buzzing sound of it makes it really annoying. A very peculiar accent is the one of Charlestone, South Canada. It reminds me of the famous voice of Darth Vader, the protagonist of Star Wars. I guess it would be fun to know how to pronounce each accent because you could act as if you were from Germany, France, Australia… exactly as this woman does.

With the second video I laughed even more! The whole video and slang words were great and actually made you think how is it possible that a same language can have such different meanings depending on which country or localization it’s in.

I recommend you to watch both videos if you want to have a laugh!

  2. This woman doing this video has exaggerated a lot the different accents. However the LA California and the Sidney Australia accents are the most natural of al, as well as the London one. These accents are not exaggerate and they are soft and gentile as the other ones are like strong and annoying to hear. The German, Berlin, and the Russia, Moscu, are very annoying because are very strong accents, firstly is funny listening to them but then is such a pain. Accents mater if a single person is patriotic and like and think that their accent is important so they show off that they are from such a country. If not it would not be a matter to worry about.

  3. Well, I think that everyone will agree that hearing different types of accents, whatever the language, is profitable, because you achieve I wider diversity in this aspect, and funny at the same time. I have to say that I was really surprised with Walker’s ability to imitate so many different accents of English around the world. I personally like the LA, Californian accent because it looks very lively and extrovert and the London one, which is much more closed but looks good. On the other hand, I don’t like the English accent from Russia or Germany, it looks awful and I consider it harmful for someone to hear; it is not natural and therefore gives a bad side of English as a language.
In conclusion, I think that what accent you are capable to develop is not important, everyone can speak English whatever way they want.

As far as the second video is concerned, I really liked the fact of having such slang in both British and American English, because it lets you discover how many linguistic differences there are between zones that share one same language but speak it differently.

  4. First of all, I would like to say that the first video was incredible, I mean, it is spectacular the work she has put in it in order of being able to copy every accent she wants to. It looks so natural when she does it that it seems as if it was so easy to do it!
From my point of view, accents give each part of the world culture; they are the identity sign of every country, state, city… As Alex says, there more accents we have around the world, the better it will be for us as we will get a wider grade of culture.
In my opinion, I find the Australian accent very complicated to understand so if I had to keep a conversation with an Australian I would find it very stressing to keep up with what he is trying to tell me.
On the other hand, I would love to learn how to speak with an Italian accent as I consider it is very elegant.
The second video was very shocking, to see how people who talk the same language, having completely contrary accents form different continents, are unable to tell what words mean, in their same language. With this video it is conveyed how a same language develops differently in opposite parts of the world.
