Who killed the electric car?

Judging from your comments on the environment article, you are especially concerned about cars and the pollution they cause. For information, I'd suggest ecomagination's article on electric cars. But for intrigue, I'd suggest looking at the following:

Electric cars were set for success before petrol-driven cars dominated the tarmac. It was the oil industry's lowering of prices that, no pun intended, drove them off the road. Then, when they were reintroduced in 1990 as a reaction to new US 'clean air' legislation, they somehow, despite rave reviews by celebrity drivers, quickly found themselves on the scrapheap. Why? Check out wikipedia or watch the documentary!

    1. jack roberts,

hello again, when it comes to alternative technology to petrol I would like to express my opinion on the fact that it is still a very new and inexperienced market. what I am trying to say with this is that it is very hit and miss and everyone including manufacturer and consumer is trying to figure out exactly which new energy source will come through and become predominant. as for the electric car I would probably put this into the miss bracket as technically the cars could work but the main stumbling point is that they are unviable where it comes to charging the car as it takes a long time and it is not an entirely clean energy source as in all probability the electricity that runs the car was probably generated by fossil fuels including the dreaded petrol.
so, to sum up, I think that it was inevitable that they would end up on the scrap heap so to speak and that it is valuable anyway as things such as electric cars have set the ball rolling on the issue of replacing the use of petrol in our modern world.

    2. there is still a lack of tecnology in electric cars as you need to charge your car every night with now exception as the car wont start up the next day, also cars running up with electricity don't reach 120 km/h as cars running with petrol over reach by a big difference reaching to a maximum of 220 km/h. Also the electric car has to be charging a certain time and the petroled car just needs to be filled with gosoline o diesel that is a lot more quicker.

Also the goverment hasent done a huge transformation giving advantages to the consumer buying a electric car nor putning electric charges around the city.

    3. I think electric cars are fantastic and should be introduced into society. They pollute less, they are silent, etc. However there is a huge problem with it. The arabs have control over petrol, petrol-station business is enormous, many countries earn money with petrol, etc. Summing up the problem in a word: Money!

Electric cars are also little developed and don't work completely right. In addition, maybe they don't pollute but their production does and a lot so... they don't pollute working but they pollute when making ... not good.

Finally, I am a big supporter of traditional cars because I love them. I have loved cars since I was approximately 1 year old (I already knew some makes). Probably many people won't understand why I love them so much and want to continue with tradition. You'll probably think I am an i***t and that I don't know nothing about preserving the planet, etc. but you would be wrong. Petrol cars tradition is magnificient and electric cars have to be implanted, and in future traditional cars will be eliminated probably but we don't have to eliminate them immediately now... I feel people have suddenly realised we are destroying the planet but we are in this process since the eighteen hundred's so... why so many impatience now? And however, I am not sure that we are destroying it... there have been two ice ages during the earth's life, the causes we unknow... so?

Out of matter, I don't understand why people adore Football in such way... I know it does reunite people and have fun, etc. But I don't see more than 11 monkeys in a football field. So if they want to prohibit traditional cars they should also prohibit Football. Because in a way, it is the same as polluting as cars. Romans had a lot of reason ("Panen e Circenses")Football was just an example of inculture towards the earth and society.

Now, indeed, petrol cars that are coming up are just marketing... Blue Efficiency! Bio-Diesel e +++++++ ... etc. They have st***d names to take people in buying cars. Cars with these names probably pollute the same or such less quantity that is insignificant.

    4. Hello, my opinion about electric cars is that there is still lots of reserching to do, the technology we have now doesn't allow the electric car to completely get away from petrol, because if you plug your car to your house, ok you are using a car that runs with electricity, but gues what, that electricity comes from burning pertrol. In addition, some electric cars are equiped with dinamos to reuse the energy from the brakes or also some cars use solar energy but the amount of energy collected isn't as big as petrol gives.

Electric cars will surely gain popularity progresively as people are getting more concerned about contamination, because the "objective" of electirc cars is to stop the climatic change. After all, the sells of electric cars has increased since people get concerned about the planet, as I said before, and that could be the reason why the electric car didn't have much (for not saying nearly any) success since it was first introduced in the 1910, it's incredible how long electric cars have been invented and the insignificant research it recieved untill nowadays.

Finally I would like to say that when fuel runs out (and it will eventualy run out), all of us with our gasoline/diesel cars won't be able to go anywhere, while the people who wisely bought electric cars will have the roads for themselves (I'm not trying to say that you have to buy an electric car right now, because next generation of electric cars will be better, more efficient and eventualy more attractive, because in my opinion they are not very attractive). An actual example of what I am saying of the lack of fuel is France. The workers in the gas stations are on strike so there is no fuel for their cars.
