"I'm nasty. I'm arrogant."

Mourinho. The name is enough.

Speak it in any bar and you are likely to inflame passion, whether devotion or anger. But is the man a monster or a saint? A bad-tempered and spiteful individual?  Or a clever, caring professional? He has called himself nasty and arrogant. Do you agree?

VIDEO 1
Is he either:
1. celebrating a well-deserved victory?
2. inciting fans with an in-their-faces display of arrogance?

VIDEO 2
Is he either:
1. bidding players of the opposition a friendly 'goodbye'?
2. intentionally slapping Puyol in the face?

VIDEO 3
Is he either:
1. belittling the reporter?
2. making a philosophical statement, putting football in its proper context?

Opinions in the press (outside of Barcelona or Madrid at least!) vary:

Jose Mourinho is an enigmatic and extremely intelligent individual, a man who understands how to play with the media and with people's minds.

He acts the obnoxious prick in public, but those who work with him mainly adore him. He’s an egomaniac who spends a lot of time tending to the egos of others.

Mourinho is undoubtedly as arrogant as they come.

So, what is your opinion?  Oh, ...and do you think Madrid will now surpass Barcelona, thanks to him?

  1. Mourinho con have strengths and weaknesses. But if he has one ability, it's that when it comes to Mourinho, you'll never feel indiferent. You'll either love him, believe he's the best coach your team could have,or hate him, feel a violent feeling of anger every time you see his controversial acts.
However, there is no doubt he's a very intelligent man.
He holds all the media pressure. He is very polemical and controversial, so all the media focus on him, which allows his players being more relaxed.ON the other hand, it is true that he sometimes goes over the top, and can talk in a very improper way to journalists.
His teams have always been victorious, no matter how bad or boring he plays, Mourinho is not a loser.
HOwever,I can't say I love him, so imagine my feelings for him..

  2. First of all, I would like to make clear that before I saw these videos I had no idea of who this man was; I obviously knew that he was a football team coach but I wasn't really sure of which team he coached. Anyway, I'm not taking sides as I'm not a fan of any football team or of the football industry in general.

From this videos, what I can tell is that this man certaintly knows how to draw attention to himself. Everyone has to agree that, nowadays, controversy is everywhere, and so is gossip. Whether you are a football coach, an actor, a singer or any kind of profession that involves fame and/or relationships with the media you have to stand out in order to be remembered by everyone and to be loved and hated.

Famous people tend to be blamed for being either too good or too bad. Mourinho has deffinately gone for the second option. The Barça team is his opponent, and being hated by their followers will only make Madrid fans like him more.

As for the Puyol slap, I'm sure he didn't actually did it to hurt him; I don't really know anything about the relationship of these two people but I think he's just teasing him and his fans, for the same reasons I stated before.

To sum up, I think football industry is way overrated and it's everywhere! So if this man really thinks of himself so highly, and if he's arrogant, it's probably because people give him more importance than the actually has, which I kind of see echoed in his last statement (Video 3). Whether if he's serious or he's just being ironic, what he said is absolutely true; people give way too much importance to little things and aren't concerned by worldwide issues.

  3. I agree in many aspects from Oscar and Andrea's comments. Jose Mourinho is a a person who generates love or hate. He's a very provocative man and likes to tease on his enemies, many times, he doesn't do it on purpose as he is so bad tempered, however he also makes it to distract them (supporters, manager...).
With his behavior he also aims to focus all the attention towards him and save his players from the rival press' criticisms.
To finish, i'd like to leave clear that Mourinho will always be a very successful manager as he is an intelligent and hardworking person who can cope with pressure easily.

  4. Santi,
When you say that the coach has no role in a team just because they have good players and they will do it all. I strongly disagree with this point as I believe tht players need direction and an authoritative figure which leads and controls them.
Also, if you apply that logic then I suppose you must also think that Guardiola is useless and a bad coach as he is also at a big club and has very good players.

  6. I’m only saying that any person in the world could train Madrid’s team because of their players so Mourinho isn’t important to them.
Applying the logic as you say, Guardiola is the best coach in the world because ¿how many trainers had won 6 titles in one year?
So he is not a bad coach as you say, of course Barça has extremely good players, but the good players of Barcelona are better because of his coach.

  7. Many people think that Mourinho its a extraordinary coach but I will tell ways that makes you think the opposite.

´Mou` has very bad mood and he is very arrogant and nasty towards the media and journalists. Another reason that he isn’t a good coach is that any person in the world could train Madras’s team because when a team has very good players the coach doesn’t have a very important role in the team because the player will do it all.

  8. Who hasn't laughed with Mourinho?
Mourinho should be psychologist if he some day decides to end his career as football coach. He's one of the bests coaches and with great experience, and has been training for most of the top Europe teams, with which he has won many championships, the most recent ones, the 3 titles with Inter Milan in the 2010 season. However, I won't argue if he'll do a great job in Real Madrid this season or if he'll win the matches against Guardiola and his players (will see next month). I want to talk about Mourinho's character. Since he trained for Chelsea we've seen that he's become a very polimical man and that he always has something to say in every interview. That way he centers all the media attention on him and not on his players, which can reach the week end more relaxed and without extra pression, and wanting to play a great match. In that sense I think Mourinho is the best at his job, although he sometimes goes over the line; but we all love Mourinho's interviews.

  9. didac says,

I think mourinho is a very good coach, and doing his job he is one of the best coaches in the world. In his job he has a lot of experience because the teams that he has managed he has won a lot of titles, for example the most recent ones with Inter Milan, he has won with them, the champions, the league and the cup of Italy.

About his charecter I have to say that he is a very polimical man. He knows perfectly how to center all the media attention on him. He does this by talking about the other teams and criticising them. Recently in an interview with the media comunication he has been criticising Pep Guardiola.

I also agree with Oscar's and Andrea's comments because Mourinho is a coach that can generate love or hate. Because some people like the way Mourinho teases and criticises his enemies but other people don't find it appropiate.

In conclusion I think that Mourinho is a very good coach and knows perfectly how to do his job but he would never be like Pep Guardiola...

  10. I don't care much about Football but I have always thought he was a nasty and arrogant person. I think football gives too much fame to people and these don't know how to cope with it!
This man thinks he is the best coach in the world and that people would kill for him but... I don't think so. He is just someone who knows how to play with press... that's all!

I really love footbal, and in my opinion Jose Mourinho is one of the best coaches in the world. Some people consider Pep Guardiola as the best coach in the world and it seems fair to me because he has won 6 titles in ONE year.
As a Real Madrid supporter, I support my coach, (not only because he is my teams coach) I have several reason about why I think this and I will expose them now:
First of all Jose Mourinho has won many titles in every team he has worked at. My reason why Mourinho is better than Guardiola is because Guardiola has won 6 titles with the best players that you could posibly think of. Nevertheless Mourinho has won the Champions League with Oporto FC, a portuguese club that not many people are concerned of.
Another reason why i think that Mourinho is a better coach is because he has had success in every football team he has been at. (Starting with Oporto, then Chelsea and then Inter. And I'm sure we'll win something this year).
I also think this because Pep Guardiola has succeed at a football team that he knew like for 20 years or so, whereas Mourinho has really had to find out about every team.
As I said here, Mourinho seems a better coach to me!
    We'll see this year...

  12. Mourinho just announced today that there wont be no more player transfers this year in Real Madrid.

In my opinion , this shows he is really sure and concerned about the players he has this year and their goals as a team . He looks very sure and confident about his decision . In my opinion other coaches would not be so sure and confident about their team at the beggining of the spanish football league ( as nothing is shown yet) , or directly would not comment on this such in an early stage of the soccer league .

This will bring a wide range of diferent opinions from both realmadrid fans and other soccer fans which will show the two extremes of this statement.

  14. Your comments are helping me build up a picture of a man who, on the one hand is controversial (avoid 'polemical') and knows how to 'play the press', but on the other hand is extremely caring and considerate towards his players. Didac's point that he deflects press attention from his players onto himself makes a lot of sense. And sometimes it is precisely the press attention which can cause fractures in team cohesion.

  15. I storngly agree with some of the comments that people have posted, however there are people saying things without knowing exactly what Mourinho was before.
Firstly I want to remark that this man is a man with a lot of personality, he is a man that at first sight you could say he is bipolar because in and out football his attitude is completely diferent.
Something that makes football more interesting is the rumours or what trainers, players or even clubs directors might say in public, this creates loads of polemical debates that makes this sport a very important one in Europe, this atmosphere is the one that Mourinho very intelligently creates.
Making reference to one of the videos in which Mourinho is celebrating in the Camp Nou some success is because years ago he was the coach assistant in FCB and things weren't so good between FCB and him, I know many people know it but people don't and they are maybe judging things without knowing really what is happening.
Despite my opinion on Mourinho I agree with the first thing Oscar said, you love or you hate Mourinho but he can't be a type of person that in some aspects he is good and in some aspects he is bad!
In my opinion he is a trainer that will take out Real Madrid to some success in the next few years.

I see Mourinho as a clever man. He loves teasing the enemy, and he does that for attracting people's attention. I believe he also acts as he sadly acts because he wants the press coming to him. You know the typicall question "Would you like being famous?", most of the people would respond NO because you can't have a nice private life. Mourinho once said he loved being famous. Mou has brought the press to his side in Spain, as I said he is a very clever man although the majority of people in the world hates him by his roodness aginst the rival.

As a conclusion I think that Mou is some kind of idiot person that no one should respect. Real Madrid has payed 8M to Inter to see if Mou can get this team to win something. He really fits in this kind of team where loads of players show off as he does. As a coach he is excellent and that is indisputable!
