Have you ever thought of technology being the cause of your insomnia?

Specialist on sleep have announces a ‘new’ kind of insomnia which is increasing in our society, “technology insomnia”. This is caused by the abusive use of the Internet before going to bed, since the luminescence screen devices like mobiles or laptops are very counterproductive to sleep; they stimulate your brain impeding it to rest properly.
Jesus Escribá, neurophysiologist Hospital Medical Nursing Home, specialized in sleep medicine, stated that the use of these devices even an hour before going to sleep not only shortens the hours of sleep, but it affects their quality. Your body is not able to complete the sleeping cycle as it should, furthermore, the next day it’s inevitable that you feel exhausted, your brain can’t think clearly, etc.
This creates a double addiction, you become both addicted to technology and the use of sleeping drugs. Most people aren’t aware of this issue, which is sadly becoming more and more common every day.
What people should do to prevent this kind of insomnia is disconnect from the internet, your phone, laptop... preferably an hour before going to sleep and leaving out of the room during the night.
Have you ever had insomnia? Was it because of technology?
Do you think it is a real problem or just nonsense?

The truth is I completely agree with neurophysiologist, Jesus Escribà’s statement. I both agree with the idea of the use of technology during pre-sleep hours being the cause of addiction to sleeping drugs and technology.
Sadly and sometimes disappointingly, I have experimented insomnia numerous times. The thing is it is uncertain to know which were the causes of it as there’s surely numerous factors, which can determine weather you have it or not. Not only insomnia can alter your sleeping routine but it can also have a negative effect on your daily routine, as you are even more tired than what someone usually is on a Monday morning.
To finish up my comment, I like to throw out the idea of technology having a major influence on society’s sleep and as an indirect consequence, on our daily routine and how tired we feel.

  2. Surely this is an issue to take in account in the following years. Not knowing about technologies, I dare to affirm that we are exposed to these negative effects of technologies in our daily life. We’ve ended up with routines that depend so much on modern technologies that we are now are not aware of the harmful effect they cause us.

Yes I have suffered from insomnia. However, it’s not something I tend to suffer from so it’s wise to think that it’s not due to technologies when suffered. I find no relation between technologies and insomnia, or at least in what applies to me. Besides, I do not overuse technology, or at least I try not to. Despite not being affected by it when trying to sleep, I find more than convincing the evidence found by the neurophysiologist Jesús Escribà. By all means we should try to give up our dependence on technologies as it would help both our professional and personal life.

Concluding, this problem should be solved as quickly as possible. The solution of it is just a matter of everyone being informed about the harmful effects we are exposed to. Using technology before going to sleep does not only affect the time we sleep, but also the quality of our sleep. So, it’s no nonsense and we should hurry to solve this in our society.

  3. Yes, sure. This problem isn’t affecting me personally but I’m aware about what it is. “Technology insomnia” is an increasing problem in our lives. Many people suffer from it, but have no clue what’s the reason for it.
Two weeks time, in La Vanguardia, a specialist insomnia doctor published an article that explained that with the “boom” of technologies, such as smartphones, laptops, tablets… the average time within the total Cataluña population when going to sleep has increased 54 minutes. But what’s worse, is we focus in the 14-18 years range, the time has increased up to 1h 34min. This is not due to computers, but it is because once a person between these ranges goes to bed, they often start using their mobile.
This problem has been classified as an addiction. It’s more serious than what most of us would have never expected. This is having terrible consequences: employees; which are tired, do no effort while carrying out their tasks, pupils loose easily the concentration, which is traduced in lower grades…
People must conscience about the severity of this addiction and start having control on what they do. If not, this problem which seems nonsense, will become, in fact, a major one.

  4. Technology is developing faster than ever before; therefore I have no doubt in how badly it is affecting human beings in multiple ways. I definitely agree with Jesus Escribá because I have been able to feel how my hours of sleep have become shorter and their quality has been affected. It makes me extremely nervous to know that nowadays the addiction to technology has led people to have an addiction to drugs as well.

When we use too much time an iPod, iPad, computers and cellphones, a hormone called Melatonin that settles the body into sleep mode can be affected because of the light. The production of this hormone in our body ends, and we aren’t able to sleep like we should. Therefore, people need to take pills to be able to sleep as well as before, which starts as an “only today pill” and ends becoming a necessity.

In my opinion, this is an extremely important problem that may affect people´s work day to day. By not having the necessary sleeping hours which are an average of 7 hours each day, people may not give their 100% attitude and effort. Everyone must understand that this is a REAL problem that has been tested, and they should use technology at least one hour before going to sleep.

In conclusion, I believe this type of problems about technology should be known by every single person, to be able to know what is happening in our present. Technology is developing in a way a lot further than what we expect it to and if we don’t have total knowledge about it and use it the way we should, we might have serious problems with it in the future.

  5. Thanks for posting this article. It is so interesting. I also had insomnia, which was really bad for me because I like to sleep. It was also strange because I'd never had a problem with sleeping before. I'd heard about the light (also called blue light) from the screens and its negative effects. I have an iPad, computer and television, and now we are always surrounded by screens.

In my opinion, this article talks about really important information that everyone should know about, but very few do. I can't imagine, if we have this problem now how bad it will be in the future. People in the future will be affected much worse because the technology will be more advanced.
