Song of the summer?

Estrella Damm has recently broadcast the summer advert that they have have created every year for the past three years now. It's no longer set in the Balearic islands, but instead it's located in "El Bullí", Cadaqués, Figueres..., providing propaganda for the Catalunya of Dalí and Ferrán Adrià.

Many people believe that the previous advertisements set in Formentera and Menorca were much better than this one, so I wanted to know the general opinion of people in the school!

  • Do you like the song? Is it catchy? Are the lyrics worse or better than before?
  • What impression of the backgorund of Catalunya do you get? Is it too propagandistic?
  • What about the story of the people in the video? Do you think it's original?

  1. When I first saw the advert, I really thought that it was more promotional to Ferràn Adrià than any other thing. I think that the image of Catalunya that they are giving is far too propagandistic. I imagine that what this advert is trying to promote is the Mediterranean diet, which is very attached to our culture, but I think it didn’t really work.

As far as the song is concerned, I don’t really find it as catchy as other year’s song, but I must admit it’s quite good. I strongly believe that the best advert was the first one; I really found that song catchy and enjoyable.

Finally, I wanted to add that I heard that to choose the song, they had to listen to hundreds of songs each year to choose the song!

  2. I personally agree with Laura and other people. The spot’s they did the past years in Menorca and Formentera where much better.

I have a great knowledge at music. I have been studying all the themes about music since I was little and I have to say that this song, Herman Dune – “I Wish That I Could See You Soon”, is one of the worst’s songs I’ve heard this year. It hasn’t got any kind of catchy rhythm or even good lyrics. Comparing with the two last songs: “Applejack” from The Triangles and “Summercat” from Billie The Vision and The Dancers we can simply say that those songs deserved being the top song of the summer. They were perfect, they had an interesting and very catchy rhythm that simply made you dance and enjoy that song no matter the times you heard it.

I think it is too propagandistic in terms that the only clear idea I get of the video is “EL BULLI” Ferran Adrià’s famous restaurant. But from another point of view this spot is great for catching the eye of different tourists.

The story about the people in the video is monotone; making a clear reference to the last two of them. Even though it has been so repetitive the last to videos where much better than this last one.

  3. In my opinion, I think this new Estrella damm's TV spot won't be as successful as the other ones, as Formentera, Menorca and The Balearic islandas in general, are known worldwide, while I don't think people who don't live in Spain or even in Catalonia, know Ferran Adria's best restaurant.

TV campaign advertisements are indispensable for a product to be sold successfully, therefore they have to be powerful and generate sustained ideas, which can remain in the minds of consumers or viewers by means of songs/melodies or short phrases for example (slogans).

In that sense, I think this new TV spot is successful, as I found the song really motivating and catchy. However, I think it's a shame that they don't continue promoting the Balearic islands, one of the most touristic places in Spain.

  4. Hello everyone much time has passed since the last time I wrote in this fantastic blog.

I personally don’t like the song comparing it 2 the other spots of Estrella Damm. I believe Estrella Damm is getting to much Catalinist whether he doesn’t talk about the fantastic flavor of Estrella Damm. Normally Estrella Damm is making spots that talk about Catalonia as it was an independent country from Spain, which is not. On the other hand the story of the people in the video is like the other past 2 summer spots.

I believe it is original and it costs a lot of money to make this promotions at TV because it is a really long spot.

  5. In my opinion the song is too basic , and for me does not catch your attention ; it has no chorus or any bit that makes you stick to it , like forexample the song from last summer spot. Moreover , for me the basic message of the spot isent that intelligent and as so dont think it would catch peoples attention from other parts from spain if that is the intention . If the intention of the spot is to catch peoples attention from Catalunya , its a great way to see your territory as catalan represented on a spot but for me if the main message is to show the catalan culture , they havent done this , i mean , they have only shown 2 o 3 beaches , and a restaurant. In my opinion one of their lasts spots in which they try to represent that they are the bear of football club barcelona is much more clever.

On the other hand what i did like about it was the way in which they combine music with images , its really clever as they try to combine different scenes with the beat of the song. Finally , what i did also like was this type of image they try to create about the type of consumer they want to have . Different aged people who want to have a good time at summer and are middel clasS.

I have to disagree with Mario because I do believe that Ferràn Adrià is actually known worldwide and he's one of Catalunya's current icons.

In my view, very different to the above comments, this video is far better than last year's, that I didn't like at all. Even though the 2009 spot was also good, this one is my personal favorite, and I really like the song, it being a perfect theme for summer.

I have to say, however, that I'm not too fond of these types of commercials. I believe that this beer and Catalunya don't necessarily share a link so I don't get the double-propaganda going on. I think this advert is accurate when it comes to the natural beauty of Catalunya and the kind of summer activities that it has to offer; it's a very fresh and young view of the perfect holiday. However, and even though it is more realistic than previous ones, I don't think that Ferran Adrià has much to do with it. 'El Bulli' is a luxurious restaurant whose target isn't at all young people, but culinary experts and people with money. I think that they mixed up two very different concepts; perhaps they attempted to remark contrasts between work and free time, but in my opinion it didn't turn out to be very effective.

  7. I agree with other most of the other people that said this is probably the worse video of the sequence. I still think it's not bad and it could be a good song for summer but, of course, the other advert had put the ribbon too high, it was hardly impossible to keep the level.

The song is less good than the other years, both Summercat and Applejack were absolutely perfect to this kind of adverts, personally I think the first one is slightly better. However I can't blame the advert that the song isn't as good because I understand if they couldn't find another.

The problem is the story in the advert, in 2009 it was quite good although very unrealistic, in 2010 it was a perfect story because it's not all perfect but it has a happy ending. This year I the story is not very clear, they don't make the viewer get into it, there's only one girl and emotions are not well portrayed. In addition the fact of being working is not the most ideal thing, people want to see what the perfect summer would be.

The advert is about Estrella Damm and Bulli of Ferran Adrià, as I said at the beginning, the advert is not bad although it's been an error to mix it with a restaurant instead of a place like Formentera and Menorca in the past.

This advert is effective in my opinion, when I saw the video I thought maybe I should go to Bulli some day and also gives me a good image of the beer. Thanks to this advert we've realised that the other two were incredibly good.

  8. I personally don’t like the rhythm of the song although I feel that the lyrics have an important message and or carefully thought. Despite not loving this song I think its rhythm is completely catchy but the lyrics, as they are so complex, there are hard to be memorized and therefore there are not as catchy as the rhythm. However, what I am sure about is that the lyrics are worse than before; before we had the same advertisement, done by the same brand and the song was named Summercat from Billie the Vision, and in my opinion it was far better song. It may seem to me that way because it was the first Estrella Damm advertisement that came up announcing the summer so I might have felt more attracted to it than the second time.

The whole advertisement is trying to give a stereotype of the young wealthy guy who has a boat and lives constantly in a party, which is why many people love this announcement. The people who see this clip and are not from Cataluña may feel that everyone in here lives like them, and it is 100% false, they are trying to associate in a hidden way the brand to a segment of the population. They are announcing Estrella Damm with these characters so perfect so that everyone tries to follow them and tries to be them by buying more beer. It is all a marketing technique. Referring to the second question on the second point, in my opinion it is really propagandistic. We are constantly seeing scenes where all of them are drinking Estrella Damm beer and the logo is perfectly shown in every single scene. It has really caught my attention the fact that around the first minute, during the concert everyone had a beer in their hand (Estrella Damm, of course), and that is completely fake. All the other scenes are not so out of what could be considered common, but that precise scene is surely not real.

Finally, and despite having written few positive things about the announcement I feel that the story is completely powerful in the sense that it is catches the attention of the viewer. I surely think it is original comparing it with other advertisements of other brands, but it is not if we compare it with the last announcement from last summer, because that’s what is all about, introducing us the summer. Estrella Damm is trying to make us understand that every time we see this advertisement the summer is near, and therefore we associate the brand with the best period of the year (for many, including me), and unconsciously we tend to buy more Estrella Damm product.

  9. I agree with most of the people that have already commented about the advert. This song cannot be considered as striking and remarkable as the spot they did in Formentera and Menorca. I agree to what Hector says that this song cannot be compared with Applejack and Summercat because It hasn't got any chorus and as well because it too basic and simple. It isn't a very catchy song, so I believe that “El bulli” will not progress.

The impression I get off the background is propagandistic and boring. In the video clip I catch sight of three beaches and one restaurant. This shows a very basic and simplified impression of Catalunya. These unimportant aspects of Catalunya are only used to grab the attention of tourists. I think that they should had used monuments like La Sagrada Familia or La pedrera, or even show the barça team playing a football match.

The people that are present in the video clip have a monotonous life. We don't get a great amount of information in this video because this people are always in "el bulli" or in a inconspicious place. The last group of people seem to be more important and significant than the others, especially the man. In addition, the song explains the man's personal life and his job in "El bulli". I can also observe Ferran Adria, the famous chef known worldwide, in most of the song.

  10. Personally I don't like this song. In my opinion the song
of last year and the year before, refering to this publicity of estrella damm, where much better than these one. Firstly because they had better lyrics and so the song was more catchy.

Also I would like to say that the publicity that estrella damm does is very propagandistic. They nirly always do a publicity sketch with something
related with Catalunya. I think that there also are other zones of Spain that are very nice. And so for example in this publicity sketch I don't know what is the relationship between "el bulli" and summer. At least in past publicity sketches you could always interprate the relationship.

In conclusion I think that this particular publicity sketch doesn't reflectbthe spirit of summer and "el bulli" doesn't have any relation with summer.

  11. Firstly I would like to point out the song. The song,as it always occurs in the Estrella Damn summer spots, is from a very unknown band and as Laura said it's usually very catchy. Well,in other spots bands like Billie The Vision have been chosen by the brand that have come up with extremely successful marketing results, but although this band(whom I don´t know it's name) is very unknown I don't think the song matches properly with the message. In addition,as a song I don´t think the lyrics are catchy it doesn't suggest any kind of feeling to me.

As far as publicity is concerned, I personally think that the strategy that this brand has adopted is completely selfish and unhelpful. As a brand,I would always try to avoid being related with one country, like Estrella Damn to Catalunya. What's worse, they've chosen the wrong "country". Mainly because with all the fuss going on about Catalunya becoming independent and all these social movement that has risen up in the last years. If you take position of your product as a product which supports this movement, your obviously loosing a great amount of clients.

Finally, I would like to add the fact that these spot is to typical and these kind of spots are always seen on TV. I think Estrella Damn should have changed of strategy, always showing the same couple in a perfect beach in the perfect place makes the spot very boring.
