"I'm not just a piece of meat"

Did you see the MTV awards?

What do you think of Lady Gaga's 'meat dress' (which is kicking up a real stink in some media circles)?

To see pictures in more detail, try this link to an online newspaper. Alternatively, there's a Youtube video with comments.

Do you like Lady Gaga?

Is she really any good or is she just clever at working the media?

... and does she have any dress sense?!?!

  1. Hello! I am new to the blog and i am impressed by the news that have been published here. Specially by this one which shows one of Lady Gaga's peculiar dresses.

In my opinion, the dress is disgusting and i'm not able to understand how anyone would like it. Who would like to have meat all over their body? Probably someone with mental problems or that's willing to do anything for attention. What is more, not only the dress is ugly but think about all the meat wasted on it and the animals killed in order to make it. I can't understand how this idea even crossed anyone's mind.

Personally i am not a big fan of Lady Gaga but i have to admit that some of her songs are catchy and have a good rhythm. As of her clothes, i think it's just a way of seeking attention but it can also be seen as a style, so i don't want to judge her dressing sense. However, i think that we should all agree that this has gone too far. I would have never imagined it.

I hope that other people share their opinions too as i am interested in what they think.

  2. I'm not against Lady GaGa's outfit at the VMA's. And that's because, after watching the show, I searched trying to find the reason she wore it, because in my opinion, no matter how chaotic she may be, all the things she does have a reason.

The dress was indeed real meat which is what I expected for its appearance. It's supposed to be a metaphor for how much freedom she has in her life, even in the public eye, as her new album will be called 'Born This Way' and it looks like she's trying to support that idea.

It also represents how hypocrite people can be, as some Americans eat big fat burgers everyday, and are offended because she decided to make a dress of it? The vegeratian community can't be offended; it is nothing related to the amount of animals killed everyday.

But above all, she has achieved controversy. All the magazines, webs, and tv shows are trying to know what's going on. Lady GaGa, as one of the biggest artists of the moment, can afford having some more haters. All celebrities have haters, and fans. So if they're going to hate you anyway, why not give them a reason to talk about you more?

  3. I didn't realise that it was real meat. It must have smelt, surely, if it was under the hot TV lights!

I also think there's an interesting angle provided by her comment that she is no 'piece of meat'. As she's a star who uses her sexuality and body to boost her record sales, some people might be tempted to just see her physique and, through her dress, she is (supposedly?!) challenging that perception of herself.

I agree that she's out to grab headlines. Do you remember Madonna's kiss in the MTV awards - was it last year? With, who was it?, Britney Spears? I guess Lady Gaga felt she had to be even more 'outrageous' in order to stay at the top of the celeb pile.

  4. Hello! I am new to the blog and it's the first time that I comment in a blog. Whilst I was skim-reading the news published I found increadibly interesting the publication that talked about being alone, the puppies and the girl... But my atonishment reached it's higher levels when I read Lady Gaga, meat and dress.

Firstly I couldn't believe what I was reading, but after giving myself some time to think about it, I even dare to say that I agree with her excentric idea.

As I found it so interesting, I even read more about it and discovered that what she was trying to do (apart from seeking people's attention) was to make a statement. "If we don't stand up for what we believe in and if we don't fight for our rights, pretty soon we're going to have as much rights as the meat on our bones,""And I am not a piece of meat," Gaga added. The statement is true, we always have to stand for what we believe, I wouldn't personally stand for my beliefs by wearing a meat dress, but it's her own and particular way of doing so and we should respect it,we like it or not.

Some people have another point of view as they think it's offensive. And I respect it, but I don't share this idea. It is amazing how nowadays we tend to find the offense in things that, if we discover their real point, are not offensive at all. She killed a cow, yes, but we kill them also to eat them! So why are we so hypocritical?

The only ones that have the right to say that this is offensive are vegetarians.

What is also true about this is that apart from making a statement, she also wants people to talk about her. And without doubt, she has done it again. She always has the best ingredients to make people collapse when they see her new videos or try to figure out the meanings of her songs. But that's her personality or what she makes us belief, she is excentric and she likes it.

Although I support the idea of having personality to stand out for your beliefs, I would never say that this dress is fashionable or elegant. It doesn't match the rules of proportion, color or design in terms of fashion. And it is neather sophisticated, nor elegant, nor chic. It is, in terms of beauty and design, rubbish.

  5. You've done well to find her full quote. I'd like to believe she really was standing up for individual rights and beliefs, but I guess I'm a little cynical. I feel it was more a publicity stunt.Unless of course she specified which rights or if she is associated with a particular campaign. Does anyone know if she is? Has anyone read or watched an interview with her?

  6. Okay - I got it wrong. It seems she does have a legitimate agenda. Here's her latest video release. The first 2'30 is enough to get the main idea, and to hear herself say, "I am here to be a voice of my generation". But if you listen on, you hear real life stories.

  7. hello again nice to be back,

firstly I would like to say that Lady Gaga is a real artist who writes her own songs and isn't like so many of the other singers that have no musical talent and are taking the glory for something they haven't created themselves. so for that reason I think that she deserves respect and admiration although her music isn't exactly my cup of tea.

about her dress sense I must admit that most of it is a bit out there and wacky, however as with her music I appreciate the originality and courage to push the boundaries of fashion to the limit (and beyond in many cases). I also believe that it is what makes her so different and I wouldn't want her to stop being who she is just because some people are offended or shocked as nobody makes you listen to her music or watch her on the telly.

  8. I didn't know she wrote her own songs. I'm quickly learning that she's not just a media-hyped superficial mix of sex and glamour.

But do you really believe in the argument that 'nobody makes you'? Surely the state or 'responsible individuals' such as teachers have to decide on limits and enforce regulations?

If you left everything up to the laws of offer and demand, you'd end up with a vicious cycle of the media and personal experience warping people's characters and these altered individuals then making ever more unconventional demands.

Just think of what people are capable of: prostitution, abuse, bullying, neglect, etc.

  9. Hello,
This is my first post in this blog, and I decided to comment in this particularly “section” as it socked me so badly. What was Lady Gaga thinking, when she decided to wear this dress?... I’m sorry but I do not understand how someone could be able to wear this. It’s just too much.

I’m may agree that if you are an artist with the society we are living in, its pretty difficult to be noticed by everyone as well as being different, and you may have to do something so people can notice or get to know you. But I really hope you are agree with me, that they don’t have to go that far. Come on, we are talking of real meat dress!!

I won’t say that I’m a big fan of Lady Gaga, but I would say that I like her songs, as they are different, catchy and the rhythm is good. In my opinion I think she is wearing all those dresses not only because she likes it, but the main reason is to get more attention from it, and good for her because she is actually getting it, but not the best way I would say. But everyone has their on opinion and I respect it.

But I must say that I do think she has done a really good job with music.

  10. Hello,
Before giving my opinion of this rare dressing of lady Gaga i would like to point out we i have chosen this news to comment and not anything else posted on the blog. This shocked me because as we all know it is not normal and by being like this it catched my attencion.
Answering the first question, my opinion about this strage way of lady Gaga's dressing seems to me a way of getting their fans attention, and also beacause all this things make her gain more money than the one she already gains. I would like to say in a respectful way that I really don't like the way she works to gain more money, because there are many other things that artists can do to be diferent, and in my opinion this one isn't the most appropiate.
I'm not a great fan of lady Gaga, but for the moment i've liked most of her songs because they are catchy and she is pretty original. So I think that in general I like lady Gaga.
    :)

  11. Hello again, I have just come back to post again as I have read something that I completely disagree with, I have no intention of being rude or anything along those lines it is just that I would like to express a different opinion.
I am talking about: when Mr.Latham and many other bloggers insinuated that the her main reason for wearing her meat dress was to be at the top of some pathetic celebrity pile and have people talk about her. I, on the contrary believe that it is a serious issue about peoples rights and I have probably never seen such a powerful, thought-provoking, eloquent and artistic protest in all my life.
She has raised an important issue in a way that she is most comfortable with and that is by using her artistic and creative talent to great effect by creating a talking point. But not to talk about her as I don't believe she is as vain as people expect her to be to talk about peoples rights, and instead of criticising and insulting her I think we should be suporting her as she was brave enough to express her opinion in a flamboyant and daring style.
I admire her for this and I would like to ask myself how many of the people that criticised her would dare do the same thing. My best guess is not many!

  12. WOW. Ok, so that really changed entirely my image of Lady Gaga.

At first, after watching her rude and sexual videoclips and seeing her garish outfits, my image of Lady Gaga was that she was just a materialistic, egocentric and a media-absorbing celebrity, which did everything just to catch people's attention and get everyone to speak about her, for good or for bad. Which she achieved perfectly with everything she did. Starting with the rumor (which I'm sure she was the one to spread it out) of her being hermaphrodite, which she then denied in her censured 'Telephone feat. Beyoncé' videoclip which caused sensation, followed by her 'Alejandro' videoclip where she rudely mixed sexuality with religion (just how Maddona did) and finally by her meat dress who gave the media a lot to talk about and became a theme for many debates.
I didn't consider her having a real and strong personality until I discovered the video from the link you posted.

I have always been a great fan of Lady Gaga, not fully because of her music, but also because of her twisted, intelligent and effective ways of attracting people’s attention and climbing up to the top charts. Not only this, but now I have to add to my list her careness for human’s rights and for world’s issues in general...

This Lady is simply amazing. A great artist and a better person.

  13. I'm in the same boat as you Carlota! I had no idea that this was a multi-faceted personality. I thought she was simply a cardboard cutout!

Also you are right about Alejandro videoclip. It has many elements in common with Madonna's 'Strike a Pose' and 'Like a Prayer' videoclips. AND it has caused exactly the same type of controversy.

Let's hope she ends up having the same long and successful career as Madonna... and keeps us surprised and entertained to the same degree.

    Thanks for the post.
