Two wheels or four?

Known as the 'skateboarding capital of the world', Barcelona echoes to the sound of jumps all year round. There are people who come to live here, just to skate.

What makes it so special? This is what Red Bull extreme sports photographers say about Barcelona.
  • Do you skate? What's the thrill?
  • Is skating better than BMX?
At the start of the video, the guy almost castrates himself and at the end, almost gets run over. Is it fair when people complain about street sports?

  1. Surfing skating sites, I found some comments about the new remodelled MACBA:

"dude way sick, that hubba is gunna get killed! the 3 just means more nollie crazy spin flips, everything just got gnarlyer. they built a community plaza without the skatepark theme... no dumb lurkers, no nasty skatepark bitches, just a legit surrounding with tons more to film on"

    Do you get it?

  2. Can it mean that, as they've remodelled the MACBA plaza, there is no place to do the skate they did before? It's kind of difficult to understand as it's in slang! I don't know if it really means what I said!

  4. Mr. Latham, all I wrote just got erased! I was in the middle of copying it!
In my opinion the slang comment you left means that the skaters wont let themselves be affected by the remodelling of the plaza. Even if they take their skateparks away, they'll just skate in the plaza finding their own obstacles, and film what they do.
    Can it be that?

I really enjoyed the video. I don't skate and I don't intend to. However, I think it would be really exciting to know how to. Skating, or BMX, any of the two. What I enjoyed most of the video, is when they go through the city, not on skateparks. It reminds me a little bit of parkour, just moving around, doing what you know how to do and love to do, adapting to different scenarios. I think knowing how to do that would be really thrilling, and I think that's why they do it. Nevertheless, I believe that going through the city like that shouldn't be done by amateurs, this could become dangerous. They should practice and learn, on the skateparks, an when they go through the city just do what they know how to do and what thay are confident of. As for the complaints on street sports, I believe they are stupoid if the worries are directed to the skaters. These already know what dangers there are of doing what they're doing, however the complaints are understandable if the worries are directed to others, not involved in the skate world.

Mr. Latham, I really enjoyed this blog, I think it's a very good idea, I'm sorry I couldn't comment on this before, but I had trouble getting in whenever I tried. I hope this continues to work! I really appreciated it!!

  5. My best guess as to what the quote you added means is this: that as the plaza has been remodeled the whole social aspect of the skatepark has died down such as guys hanging out there even though they don't skate or girls who are there to meet people or chat guys up. He considers this to be a good thing as even though the skateboarding theme has disappeared he believes the plaza is just as good as before to do tricks on and film new videos and as a plus they have gotten rid of the people that used to just go to hang around.
Now coming back to the main theme I must say before I give my opinion that I don't skate or ride BMX's but I have tried it in the past and even with my complete lack of skill I had loads of fun. Mainly because I get a major kick out of speed and when you are skateboarding you feel really close to the ground and it is exhilarating and has an element of danger. So, I am saying that I understand why people skate, but it can be slightly antisocial.
the problems that it causes is that it is part of a larger problem. If youths were just skating then there wouldn't really be an issue, but it comes as part of the culture of loitering and hanging out on the street. It will often include alcohol and drugs which are social problems that need to be dealt with. Therefore I understand why people complain and I think the solution to this problem would be to create designated areas to skate in so that it is contained.
One thing I would like to add slightly of the subject matter is that in Barcelona the fine for skating in the street is 200 euros and having your skateboard taken off you. I think this completely outrageous and is atrocious as it will only serve to make skaters more marginalised and angry and it doesn't solve the problem it only aggravates it. So I would like to add that you can't just moan and complain about skating and BMXing unless you have a positive, helpful and constructive comment to make to help improve the situation.

  6. I think that what Jack said was right. I think that the comment Ian found and posted on here meant that the new skate ramp would be a good place to skate and try new tricks without having people and girls that don't practice the sport bothering.
BMX and Skating are two different things. You can compare them but i don't think you can decide which one's better. Everyone will give you a different answer and opinion depending on their interests. However i think that both sports are loads of fun; they can be dangerous as it's shown in the video but they can both give you a great kick of adrenaline.

  7. I never did skate and i will neve do. When I was younger I wanted to try skating but it was to complicate so I tied scooting and it was really good because its more seccure than skate and I dominate it.

BMX is completely different than skating because thir very different styles. If I had to choose i will choose BMX because there are more tricks to do and it goes faster than skate or anything that doesn´t have engine.

  8. I do not skate neither try BMX , but as i am concerned skateboarding is rather much an older sport than BMX.

BMX has been a recent different way to use ordinary bicycles . They are much smaller than ordinary ones and are known as the freestyle bicycles , whereas skateboarding was directly invented for this type of sport ( freestyle ), and is one of the first sports which really applied itself to this new dinamic .

If i had to choose on of them , it would probably be to learn how to skateboard properly .
BMX look really cool , eventhough ive allways though its better to use bicycles for moving around as a way of transport . Moreoever skateboarding really brings much more my attention , as they are much smaller than bicycles ( so easyer to move around with them ).

  9. Like Santi, I'd probably go for a bike as they are faster; but Hector has a point about being able to move around easily with your skateboard: round a city, a country or the world... as the huge numbers of skateboarding tourists coming to Barcelona show!
