The baby trade

Ana Josefa Escabia died several hours after giving birth in Terrassa in 1975. Her husband clearly remembers seeing his daughter alive.

"I saw her born," Salvador Martin said, his eyes welling with tears, 36 years later. "She was gorgeous, just like her sister."

But doctors later told Salvador his baby had been stillborn. A sealed coffin was delivered to the cemetery.

The news that babies have been traded in Spain right up to the 1990s hit the headlines here a few months ago. It has now reached the British press: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-12886441
  • Have you heard about it?
  • Was any of this trade well-intentioned?
  • If this is a crime, what should the punishment be?
  • How would the victim of such a crime feel like?

  1. First of all i should probably start by saying that the link provided above didn't work for me and i had to search for the name of the article in google in order to be able to view it. So if anyone has problems, i suggest you google the article's name.

Until now i had never heard about these horrible news. Even worse, if someone had told me the story i would've probably thought they were kidding me as i'm unable to understand why someone would do such a thing.

No, not only this trade was illegal and full of lies but the people that were doing these things were destroying families when there're thousands of orphans in the world who are looking for a family. I can't understand how it would occur to anyone (even less an educated doctor) to steal someone's baby in order to sell it illegally. As much money as he might have received, he was playing with people's lives for which this is just unintelligible.

I'm sure that what these people did is a crime and i wouldn't expect or give them less than a life imprisonment as they have also imprisoned kids to a life that shouldn't have been theirs. What is more, not only have they done that but they have also changed the birth giving families to a life full of pain of not having met their child and fear of loosing a another one.

Judging by the fact that the person actually committed the crime, i wouldn't expect them to feel inexplicably repentant. However, taking in mind that they are human beings and that we all make mistakes, i do hope they feel some sort of regret.

In conclusion, these people are out of their minds and no one should ever do these kinds of things or play with other people's lives. I hope the guilty are found and punished for what they've done.

  2. Firstly, I want to mention that I have heard of more cases about ´stolen` newborn babies and I think that it’s incredible that people can do such an atrocious thing. Are people thinking in what are they doing?

This kind of people, after doing this, what they deserve is death. So this would be the punishment that the Governs should apply to them. However, of course is not well intentioned but there are humans that do this things to win money because after stealing the baby, they may sold it or something else.

Secondly, the victim of this crime, after knowing the truth, would feel awful, horrible, deplorable, many bad things. I have heard in many cases that the when the victim know the truth, after a few time of suffering and having a terrible time, they suicide. In addition, this only happens in the extreme case, but yes, it happens. Antonio says "I discovered my whole life was a lie", this means that his life is empty and has no sense.

Finally, it’s unbelievable that people, if we can call them people, mean to do this, but as I said, the main thing that makes them do this is money.

Yes I have heard of this trading children thing . In my opinion none of this trading can be well intentioned , i mean , you are rejecting to your own child , you are giving away something that has no price . You are giving to someone else your child . Imagine what could happen to your child .. for me it is not guaranteed that your child is going to continue living , unfortunately lots of babies are killed and their organs are traded .

Those who trade babies logically means they are doing something illegal , they are trading things in the black market , so logically they would need a punishment . Those who trade c hildren, do not have fealings . Those who trade , those who give away their children and those who buy them.

  4. I find baby trading extremely embarrassing and not proper of the twentieth century. These people who do this should be found and imprisoned immediately! From a philoshopical point of view, I'd say they are not persons any more...

I think there is anything more to comment, it is just unacceptable and something should be done to avoid this. Maybe increasing security in the hospitals, putting a GPS to new-born babies, etc.

  5. Unfortunately these kind of cases are not unusual as there have been and will be more kidnappings and other child theft related crimes but this particular case is shocking, not because of the child theft itself but because I find it hard to believe that the people that bought the children did not know where those babies came from and if they knew how can they live with themselves knowing that they stole someone’s baby.

The intentions of this trade are obvious, financial profit. The people that do this kind of atrocious actions are usually desperate to ear some extra money, unless it is organised by the mafia. For which ever reason these actions are made they are completely unforgivable and in no way could have had any good intentions as stealing babies to sell them is one of the most terrible things a person can do.

There is no doubt that this is a crime and that it should be punished. Probably the most suitable punishment would be jail as a fine would be too little for a crime of this dimension. Life in jail would be perfect for these disgraceful people.

As for the victims of these crimes, they must feel shattered. The parents of whom the baby was stolen not only have to remember the horrible day they were told that their baby had died but now they will not be able to stop wondering where their offspring is and a lot of them will look for them. The children that were stolen will suffer even more as not only are they adopted but they will know that in a way their parents stole them from their biological parents.

In conclusion, there is no possible way of justifying what these baby snatchers did and the most suitable punishment would be life in prison as these actions are unforgivable. Also, they have caused irreparable damage to the victims of this and probably ruined their lives.
