More technology

Discovery Channel's web-site is great for information about:
  • bio-brain-driven cars
  • yesterday's predictions for the future
  • a quiz on 'new' inventions
  • the opinions of leading experts
...and much more!

Don't forget that you have a circle debate on 'what the future holds in store' (or 'where current trends are taking us') on Thursday 9th December... and you should have commented on one of the related posts by then.

(PS. Why not ask your parents or grandparents what they thought the future held in store - and which changes have most surprised them.)

This is a tiny part of the world’s largest photograph. It contains 80 Giga pixels and is made up of 7,886 individual high definition photographs stitched together to form one humongous 360 degree panorama of London.

It is so detailed that you can zoom in and see people’s faces taken from over a mile away. Created by 360 Cities. If it was printed out in real size it would be 100 feet long and 50 feet wide.

Look at the explore other places tab and it will take you around the world.

Firstly I would like to mention what people thought of the future en the fifties and the sixties. Moreover they imagined aspects like robots, one robot in every house task like for example one that is in the kitchen, another that is preparing the table and cleaning the dishes and others that are cleaning the floor.
They also thought that we will be living in space ,in cities and jetpacks.
In those times, computers weren't so common as nowadays so they imagined, when scientists invented the computer chip, that they would finally do amazing and uniques things like download books directly to the brain or building up cities underwater.

On the other hand,we see the world in the next 50 and 100 like those people of the fifties and the sixties say it years ago.I am not completely opposed to these ideas but some are really stupid and absurd as you might see.

You might think it's strange and ridiculous for some ideas that have been provided like the dolphin one but other ideas like the car is really amazing as it doesn't crash and it detects danger.
IT'S DIFFICULT TO FIND ITS ORDER-

  3. I think that all this new technology which certainly is the furute of our specie is very good, but without exceding the limits. Mobile phones, cars, airplanes and more have certainly improved a lot our style of lives, most people nowadays couldn't live without a car or a mobile but after watching the videos in class I was seriously afraid. Cientifics are going too far,and creating machines more intelligents than us can be a very very bad error, who knows that sometime this machines can go crazy and start doing mad things?? These cientifics are getting obsessed with these advances and creating robots or uperintelligent computers can be very bad in the future.
Also,we watched a house that was controlled by a computer. It seemed like if we humans couldn't do anything by ourselves and all house tasks were taken by the machines, this is really stupid. All of us can wash our plates or put our children in bed without help,so I think that if these advances continue we will turn completely useless, because all our tasks will be done by machines.

  4. I seem to agree with Pedro’s views about future inventions. Progress might be an important issue for society, but we have to maintain conscious of these inventions. Are we going too far that it might not be possible to control them? Are they reaching to a point of perfection, we might not be at their level? We don’t know certainly what disadvantages will present the innovations, also human have always been scared to the unknown. Should we now pay attention to our feelings or just keep discovering new methods of technology, like we’ve been doing until now?
Although there have been a lot of changes through the years, there hasn’t been much changes with the views people show with these changes. Records from the past show how people thought they’d travel to work every morning with flying cars! That they’d be served by robots at their homes! That they would depend solely on technology and they would probably lose all their abilities, their self-sufficiency, etc.
In my opinion when a new innovation appears we reach a risky point when we have to be very cautious that the damages this makes, don’t damage a whole society, and if it does try to destroy the objet before it is too late. We shouldn’t stop walking to the future only because we get scared, we should try always or else we would get stagnant and wouldn’t improve our way of life.

  5. I think progress is quite a good aspect for society not in an excess. I am in agreement with Elena, about the fact this advantages can bring also many disadvantages which can be very harmful. We don't even know what this are so then, why don't we try to investigate about them? Yes, ok, but as everything in the globe: patience!!! We need to be patient and work slowly and in order for progression, not in a kind of "Progressive dictatorship". THat is the clue to it!

I am also in agreement with Elena about the loss of auto-sufficiency... I believe we will be as in the Wall-E film, sat down in big technologic auto-sufficient sofas which will do everything for us. I find it pathetic but we can indeed, arrive to such extremes...

  6. Probably it's true that innovations in technology are key for the development of our society in all aspects.
In my opinion though, in a lot of cases, what we do (more than developing) is complicating our lives more and more, but no one can disagree with the fact that, this changes, are necessary and essential.
Refering to the videos we watched in class, I agree with Pedro, having a house controlled by a machine is useless and it's just a way of complicating your life without having the need to.

  7. I think all these new futuristic materials and new technologies of coursre they are all prototypes. If they wanted to gain some money they would allow their comerzialitzacion. So I think they don´t allow them to comerzializice with them.
Althougt all that these new technologies are fighting to gain new and of couse better materials. With these new developments materials existens can be more efficent etc..
In conclusion these materials and developments are the future but we will have to wait for then to arrive.

  8. In a way, I agree with Mario. We are sometimes complicating science, trying to innovate and create new things from the Sci-Fi films. It's like we are trying to prove ourselves that we can do it, that it's not just fiction, invented, we are actually able to make those things.

However, in other aspects science is very useful, and I'm sure no one will complain when arriving at home and not having to clean, tidy up, etc. A robot would have done it.

For me, I personally think there are two fields in which we have to focus: medicine and environment. For instance, scientists know a way of solving cancer (with a magnetically charged nano-particle), but they haven't managed to create it (YET). Well, for me this is the priority. And obviously they have to develop renewable energies. I'm 100% sure they can, but the ones who own the fuel pay them. I'm beating around the bush, but I think you all know what I mean.

I've watched the Discovery Channel videos, and NOW I've realized that the idea of letting a machine develop is actually a bit scary... It's weird, because we are so used to see that things are created naturally, and now we are like Dr Jekyll, or the one who made Frankenstein. In fact, those were novels that showed the fear of mankind towards evolution and science.

To conclude, I feel that we should try to be careful with what we do, although not because of that we have to stop. It's just a matter of being cautious. It's nonsense trying to stop scientific development, because there will always be someone who investigates. Curiosity is what made us intelligent.
There's always time to think about it carefully: is it useful, what we are investigating? Should we continue this way or try to develop other (and more important) technologies/sciences?

  9. In my opinion all of these new technologyes that are comming up will be very important in the future. But some of these new technologyes are a bit scary.

Certainly cars, mobile phones, ipods, mp3, etc have improved a lot our lifestyles and there are a lot of people in the world that can't live without there car or mobile phone, and this i find it a bit stupid.

But refering to the videos that we watch in class about very advanced technology, sincerely some of these videos scared me a little and I was also afraid. For example one of the videos that we watch in it appeared a house that was autosuficient, so the house did it all for you: the house washed the dishes, adjusts the temperature of the house, reminds you of things that you have to do, it had a central computer that like a technological brain that did human things. This for example I don't find it very appropiate, that my house could do all of this things, it gives you the sensation that the house controls you...

I also agree with miguel that in what we have to focus on is in medicine and environment, and improve the technologyes related with these two topics.

To conclude I would like to say that new technologyes are very good, and they improve our lifestyles but I think we should create new technologyes without exceeding the limits. The example that I described of the house before, these exceeds the limits clearly...

  10. I believe that all of this technological improvements will just benefit our society in many ways. Despite this fact, I cannot understand how a human is trying to create a robot that will be much efficient and intelligent than we are.
How we saw in a class video if this occurs the human species will simply end, the robots and other machinery will take place and we'll no longer be here.

In my opinion this extreme cases should not happen because they will end harming the society (if it lasts).
I personally believe that creating sophisticated new machinery is an excellent help to the humans way of life, what we cannot allow is having new technology that replaces ourselves. I just can't understand it.

Despite not showing a really positive opinion towards new technology in this comment I am certainly comfortable with the idea of improving our technology.

What I surely think is that the future is based on technolgy, so the sooner we start investing on it the shorter we'll last to improve.

  11. In my opinion, new technologyes are vital for our future. Despite this i also have to say that this new technolgys advances are scary, and agreeing with Mario´s comment some of this advances complicate our lifes.

This improvemens are focus in the innovation of our lifestyles, like for example mobile phones, cars, mp3 etc...

I believe that we will give an important use to new technology but i think that this science has to focus more in medicine and enviroment things more important to the human life that are afectting our specie day to day and radically.

In conclusion we must be careful with what we do and we have to be aware with this changes and in all moment be capable to control it.

  12. About the new technologies I would like to comment that they are really important to improve society’s lifestyle and so on.

New technologies improve lots of different varieties of things such as electronic devices or for example solar cells or cars that use ecological fuels to reduce global warming.

New technologies seem to be really essential in people’s lifestyle but also they seem to have negative improvements that they can warn society. Making people feel scare about them. To take evidence about this scariness we can see the changes of robots, lots of scientists think that in the future robots can exchange humans, this seem to be really alarming to lots of people.

In my opinion I would like to say that new technologies have more positive developments than negative. I think that robots cannot improve societies and they won’t exchange us in the future.
