Fight !! Fight ??

This demonstration is causing a lot of controversy right now.

The right wing press writes of an illegal demonstration led by violent protestors who tried to storm Congress -  a threat to democracy which the police thankfully defused with the appropriate degree of force.

The left wing media talk of a small minority of violent extremists, some of whom were undercover cops, being used by the police as an excuse to violently break up a peaceful and legally authorised demonstration.

What do you think happened? Are such large-scale demonstrations justified or even necessary in a democracy? Is violent protest ever acceptable? Did the police act as they should have?

  1. As always, extremist thoughts or political ideas bring us to this unwanted show of violence. I’m sure that the great majority of demonstrators really didn´t mean to end it like this. We, as human beings, have the right to express our ideas. But it always ends up to be someone who spoils the beauty of democracy. Although the police´s roll on it wasn´t exactly appropriate I think that both, demonstrators and police gave a really bad image of what should be a united country in these days in which Spain is being stalked by the economical crisis and in which being Spanish should mean to help us mutually and not fight between us. However, I think that this kind of demonstrations, being left wing or right wing, joined to what people vote, is what keeps our democracy alive. Tolerance and respect are the basic thoughts for rational thinking, and some should remember about that. Let’s try less fighting and more working all together to get out of the crisis!

  2. The further I read down the article the more upset I felt towards today´s actual Spanish political rulers or applying for. Just by reading how both, the left and the right wing, changed their version of the success, we can clearly see how competition ruins the beauty of politics. Once again, the right wing makes up their own story about the manifestation, followed by the left party saying that the police used an exaggerate amount of violence, which is clearly a hyperbole. If something is clear about the manifestation is that the demonstration isn´t positive for Rajoy´s party. Therefore it is understandable that the police acted as reflected in the video, as they are ruled by the state. Being empathetic towards Rubalcaba´s party, it is also likely to happen that he’ll use these extraordinary acts to support his disagreements with Rajoy and to reinforce his political ideology. To conclude, we should be asking ourselves the following question: Are demonstration no longer an aberration?
